Tablet shipments continue to decline, Apple remains the market leader

Just after a slight upsurge during the Q3 of 2019, overall tablet sales have once more declined in the final quarter of 2019. According to a new report from IDC, the sales decline is somewhere around 0.6% YoY as a total of 43.5 million units were shipped during the three-month period.

Apple unsurprisingly kept the lead in the tablet segment. Interestingly enough, the Cupertino-based company has shown great numbers in 2019. The company came from 43.4M unit shipped in 2018 to 49.9M units sold in 2019. That represents a 15.2% year growth. Samsung comes in the second place, however, its margin decreased from 16% to 15.1%. Huawei also had a slight decrease in its numbers, and we can’t say if this was due to the ban or to the weakness of the market. Amazon takes fourth place with a 9.9% YoY growth over 2018. Lenovo sits in fifth place and is followed by all the other companies launching tablets. During 2019, the tablet shipment shrank by 1.5% as worldwide shipments reached 144.1 million units.

As per the Q4 2019 results, only Apple and Lenovo achieved positive numbers in the past quarter. The US-based company figured 15.9 million units of iPads sold in the last quarter of 2019. What could be the secret of Apple’s success in the tablet segment? Perhaps it has to do with the software, more than with the advanced hardware. Apple keeps investing in the tablet segment, unlike other companies who need to rely on Android, that seriously is lacking when it comes to providing a good tablet experience.

Apple’s continuous investment in the tablet segment may be the reason behind its success

Apple released iPadOS in the last month. This way, the company can keep developing exclusive features for tablets that aren’t really useful in smartphones. It may be one of the reasons behind the increase in sales during the last year.
