Recently, Google has been working on streamlining its messaging application and setting up RCS chat for the general public. It’s not close to iMessage yet, but the company is continually adding new features to improve the experience. Emoji reactions in RCS messages is the last feature being tested in the Messages app.
Emoji reactions have already been discovered. But the functionality has now started to appear for users. For those who do not know, this feature allows you to long-press a message to see a group of emojis, similar to those seen on Facebook, appear on your screen, including the thumb up, thumbs down, anger and a crying emoji. This feature seems to only work on the RCS version and is not available in SMS conversations.

The emojis reaction feature was first noticed by users on Reddit. But currently, it seems that the test is quite limited and only a few users see the 7 choices of emojis (shown in the image above).
For now, Google seems to be testing the functionality with a small number of users. However, it is not clear whether running the latest beta version of the application is a prerequisite for seeing reactions by emojis or if it is a server-side set up by Google.
You must be wondering what will happen if one user received the feedback function and the other did not. Well, as the reports point out, the user who does not have the new emojis feedback feature will receive feedback via an RCS text message to, say, that your friend laughed at your message. I know this may seem very confusing at first, and it could be the case for many RCS users.
Google Messages is not the first chat app to get emoji feedback. It is also available in Facebook Messenger, Twitter direct messages, and Apple’s iMessage.
