The competition in the smartphone manufacturing industry is huge. Even the “first-class” manufacturers are very careful with what they throw into the market. Gone are the days where huge companies just stamp prices on smartphones whether it’s worth it or not. The likes of LG and Sony priced themselves out of the smartphone market. Samsung wouldn’t want to do that thus it is weighing its options. When it comes to OLED screen production (Super AMOLED), Samsung is on top of its game. However, its solution significantly increases the price of the device and sometimes makes it “too expensive”.
Recall that some months ago, Apple assessed BOE’s OLED screen solution. After the iPhone 12 series, BOE will supply 5.4-inch and 6.1-inch displays to Apple. This will obviously reduce the price of the iPhone. Now it appears that Apple will not be the only top phone manufacturer to use BOE’s display. The latest report shows that Samsung also fancies BOEs’ solution. Is this entirely a surprise? Not really, because the company needs to compete.

Earlier reports from South Korea claim that Samsung will consider BOEs display for the Galaxy S21. However, reports out of China claims that it could also use this display for the Galaxy S30 (maybe the actual name for the S21). According to reports, Samsung has currently sent three price negotiation letters to potential suppliers. In its current program, Samsung Display will supply 60Hz and 120Hz screen quotations, while BOE will supply 90Hz.
From this perspective, Samsung seems to be considering equipping the three new S30 models with different refresh rate screens. Although this year’s S20 is 120Hz for the entire system, by choosing 60Hz and 90Hz, it obviously helps to lower the price and thus increase market competition.
On its part, BOE says that it is ready to do business with any manufacturer that needs its solution. Recall that the company shot into limelight after its cooperation with Huawei on the Mate 20 series. Huawei used LG’s and BOE’s displays for the Mate 20 series. While there were several reports of a faulty LG display, BOE was quite stable. In January last year, BOE surpassed LG and became the main supplier of Huawei Mate 20 Pro display.
Not long ago, BOE and Qualcomm also reached a cooperation to do in-depth research and development of screen fingerprints. Obviously, this is also a positive signal for Samsung Galaxy S30.
