BlackShark upcoming flagship charging capacity will exceed 100W

Chinese manufacturing giant, Xiaomi, is quite innovative and has been doing well in the smartphone market. However, when it comes to charging capacity, another Chinese company, Oppo, has been on top of it. Presently, the highest fast charge capacity for mobile phones is 65W. The upcoming Lenovo rescuer e-sports mobile phone will launch the first 90W fast charging. This implies that the era of 100W fast charging is not far away. According to recent speculations by a Weibo leakster, Black Shark’s iterative flagship will exceed 100W.

Xiaomi 100W fast charge

At present, Xiaomi and vivo have demonstrated their own 100W and 120W fast-charging solutions. In the first half of this year, Lu Weibing, president of Xiaomi Group China and general manager of the Redmi brand, said that 100W fast charging technology is still in its early stages. As of now, it is not ready for mass production and can only come in the future.

According to Lu Weibing, the 100W fast charging is not far from mass production and commercial use. In addition, the upcoming BlackShark flagship may be the first to use fast charging technology with 100W or higher power. However, the applicability of this technology is not as simple as it sounds.

Fast charge technology must consider these

According to Lu Weibing, fast charging technology needs to consider 5 technical difficulties:

  • Battery capacity loss: This refers to the overall usability of the battery. The faster the charging speed, the greater the battery capacity loss. This means that with such high power charging, the battery can not perform at optimal capacity for long.
  • Technical realization (technical architecture): It also has to consider the ultra-high voltage charging scheme. It has to be compatible with different regions so it will not cause any issue for users.
  • Performance: To make 100W charging is technically possible. However, the development also strongly considers its ability to achieve long and sustainable workability
  • Security: This is one of the most important aspect of fast charging. It needs to have multiple protections for motherboard/battery/charger, etc.
  • Cover multiple charging scenarios: Consider wired charging + wireless charging scenarios, and charger compatibility.

It is worth noting that in 2019, Lin Bin, vice chairman of Xiaomi Group, demonstrated Xiaomi’s 100W fast charge.  With the Xiaomi 100W fast charge, a 4000 mAh battery fully charges in 17 minutes. This is only a test charging speed. When the technology eventually enters mass production, the charging speed may be faster. What do you think about Xiaomi’s 100W charging?
