Last night, Lei Jun brought a speech on the 10th anniversary of Xiaomi. After the speech, the Mi 10 Ultra was officially released. There are three versions: transparent version, bright silver version, and ceramic black version. The phone costs 5299 yuan ($764). But what is more interesting, we are dealing with three ‘120s’: 120x ultra-telephoto camera, 120W second charging technology, 120Hz billion-color screen. Also, it ranks first in DxOMark. The sale will start on August 16, and the pre-sale is now open.

As the company introduced, the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra sports a built-in 4500mAh large battery. For the first time, it uses 120W ultra-high-power wired charging that is rare in the industry. It charges 41% in 5 minutes and can fully charge the phone in 23 minutes. Today, we are going to take a look at this technology.
Customized charging chips
The Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra adopts a new 4:2 high-power charging architecture. By decomposing high current into dual low-current charging, it not only reduces the impedance of the charging path but also improves the overall conversion efficiency. The two charging paths have ultra-efficient customized charging chips. So they form a dual charge pump parallel architecture.
Among them, two customized charge pumps have a conversion efficiency as high as 98.5%. It not only makes the charging conversion rate higher but also greatly improves the stability of charging. In the process of 120W high-power charging, the two high-voltage currents of 20V 3A are converted into two low-voltage currents of 10V 6A. Then, they are finally converged into a high-current input battery of 10V 12A.
This charge pump chip is specially customized by Qualcomm according to Xiaomi’s charging requirements. The charging conversion efficiency is much higher than that of the previous charge pump chips. The charging efficiency is higher, the loss is lower, and the energy loss during the charging process is lower. Secondly, the more efficient customized charge pump can also reduce the heat generated during the charging process. The lower charging temperature further extends the duration of high-power charging and improves the charging speed.
The ultimate space is stuffed into a 4500mAh battery
In order to meet the high-power charging of 120W, the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra uses a brand-new butterfly double-string battery. The latter is connected in series with two 2250mAh batteries, equivalent to 4500mAh. The structure design of the butterfly type double cell in series can double the charging power under the condition of the same charging current.
The newly designed butterfly package has a smaller protection circuit than the traditional side-by-side double-string battery. Also, it can obtain a larger battery capacity under the same volume. The backside of the protection circuit also adds a phase change heat storage material to effectively alleviate the battery temperature rise during the charging process and extend the duration of high-power charging.
Secondly, the battery cell adopts a low internal resistance tab design. It reduces the internal resistance by 36% compared with the traditional battery, achieving lower charging loss and faster charging speed. The temperature during charging can also be reduced by 4.8°C.
Gizchina News of the week
The company uses a thicker and lower impedance dual FPC connection between the battery and the motherboard. On the one hand, the dual FPC facilitates the shunting of current and prevents the FPC connector from overheating during high-power charging and disperses the heat source. But on the other hand, the customized FPC also effectively reduces the energy loss during charging. Plus, it reduces heat generation and improves charging efficiency.
In addition, the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra uses the Battery Sense battery cell voltage monitoring technology. It helps the phone to accurately detect the true voltage of the battery cell. So it can effectively avoid errors caused by the battery protection circuit. Thus, it will bring a more accurate charging strategy during the charging process, making the overall charging time further shorten. In addition, the cell voltage detection and cell balancing algorithm can balance the voltage difference between the dual cells. It can avoid overcharging of high-voltage cells and over-discharge of low-voltage cells. This will extend battery life, undoubtedly.
34 layers of safety protection
While the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra supports fast charging, it also adds as many as 34 safety protection measures. They ensure the safety of high-power charging. In addition to the charging circuit, it has an independent MCU charging safety chip. Once it detects an abnormal charging status, the 120W charging can be turned off immediately. The anti-reflow circuit is specially designed for high-power charging to avoid damage caused by the use of 5V chargers. Type -C charging port adds a more corrosion-resistant rhodium ruthenium alloy material to reduce corrosion problems caused by high-power charging.

In addition to hardware protection, the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra has also passed the TÜV Rheinland Safe Fast Charging Certification 3.0. While experiencing the pleasure of fast charging, there is no need to worry about safety.
Not only charge quickly, but also use it for a long time
The 120W fast charge of the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra can charge 41% in 5 minutes and 100% in 23 minutes. All manufacturers have to choose between the large capacity battery and fast charging. It seems Xiaomi has made a balanced choice. We mean it comes with a 4500mAh battery, which is essential for a 5G phone. But it has also added a fast charging technology.

In terms of battery life, the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra uses a high-life fast-charge battery. After 800 complete charge and discharge cycles, the effective battery capacity is not less than 90%. We should mention that the industry standard battery generally adopts the standard of 60% for 400 cycles. In the long run, the Mi 10 Ultra can greatly reduce the drop in effective battery capacity and ensure the battery life of the phone after long-term use.
Final Words
The Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra not only supports the 120W high-power wired charging, but also supports the fastest 50W wireless charging. When using the latter, it can charge to 100% in 40 minutes. The charging speed is even faster than the 50W wired charging on the market.
