Huawei Announces 3 New Research Directions: Digital Health Truly Enters Daily Life

The watch may be just a tool for you to check the time. Maybe you have already started using smartwatches. But most of the ‘non-professional’ users only use them as alarm clocks, transportation cards, or information reminders. However, in recent years, functions such as heart rate, blood oxygen saturation, sleep quality, and ECG monitoring have become widely used on smartwatches. So they have become a new generation of health companions that can protect users’ physical conditions.

Traditionally, diseases such as hypertension and coronary heart disease are only related to the elderly. But in recent years they have all begun to show ‘younger’ characteristics. Going to the hospital for testing on a regular basis is certainly an effective means of protection. But often some cannot get accurate results through one or two tests. In this case, the smartwatch that accompanies the user every day has naturally become the best carrier.

At the Huawei Pollen Annual Conference held on January 23, He Gang, President of Huawei’s Consumer Business Smartphone Product Line, announced for the first time Huawei’s three ongoing health research projects: Hypertension Management Research, Smart Body Temperature Health Research, and Coronary Heart Disease Screening Research.

Hypertension management on Huawei Smartwatches

Regarding research on hypertension management, Huawei will cooperate with well-known Chinese institutions, with home medical-grade high-precision blood pressure measurement as the core, and joint industry experts to explore innovative active health management of blood pressure from screening to early intervention. Through 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, more comprehensive and real-time data are generated for users.

Huawei’s research on heart diseases

The company will also pay attention to coronary heart diseases. Huawei plans to use the ECG collection capabilities of wearable devices to combine PPG and ACC data to achieve intelligent screening and early warning of coronary heart disease. To a certain extent, it can replace the high-cost, smooth and complicated traditional diagnosis method, and carry out more effective and economical early detection.

Last year’s epidemic made everyone realize the importance of body temperature monitoring. It can provide more timely feedback on the immune and operational status of the human body, so as to achieve early feedback on some diseases and emergencies. According to Huawei, it currently has the ability to accurately and continuously monitor body temperature based on high-precision temperature sensors and intelligent compensation algorithms. This function will also be used in devices such as smartwatches in the future.

Currently, Huawei has established two sports health science laboratories in Shenzhen and Xi’an, and will build a third laboratory in Dongguan in the future. In addition to the above points, they will also develop more functions and new product development, and regularly carry out crowd testing activities. They will also invite users to participate in the data collection and product testing links, and further enhance the practicability of the product.
