Xiaomi is testing the virtual expansion of the RAM

MIUI 12.5

Owners of a number of Xiaomi smartphones often complain that MIUI is eating RAM mercilessly. Lack of memory leads to systematic freezes; where the typical behavior of the system is the crash of one of the applications when using several utilities. There are prerequisites that over time, the company may offer a mechanism to solve the problem with the lack of memory.

So, after examining the MIUI 12.5 firmware code, the developer Kacper Skrzypek was able to find the memory expansion function. The company can call it “expanding RAM” and it will allow smartphones to “breathe” more freely when working with resource-intensive applications, when part of the storage can be converted into RAM. But this function will be active only when the smartphone starts to work at the limit of its capabilities. It is also not clear when it will come to Xiaomi smartphones.

This feature is not new and a number of manufacturers are already experimenting with it. So, a similar mechanism is available in Vivo X60 and OnePlus 9 (in the form of Turbo Boost). The function of virtual RAM (or extended RAM) is to compensate for situations when it is necessary to complete a task that requires more RAM than is available on a smartphone. In this case, the system “takes” a part of the storage memory; and fills it with data that is not in use at the moment and does not require immediate access.

In essence, the function allows RAM and ROM to exchange data with each other in order to more flexibly adapt to the use case that is needed at a particular point in time. The priority for the RAM is the data required to complete the process running on the smartphone; and the rest of the data is sent to the storage. If the operating scenario of the device changes, the RAM and storage again exchange data with each other in order to use only those that are needed at that moment.

Enhanced memory management technology

This mutual exchange allows the smartphone to easily keep the most frequently used applications in the background; in order to ensure a high opening speed. And it also has a positive effect on the smoothness of the interface itself; when the comfort of working with a smartphone increase.

At the moment, there is no exact understanding of how much it will be possible to increase the virtual RAM of Xiaomi smartphones. In the case of the Vivo X60; this function (Enhanced memory management technology 1.0) allows you to get an additional 3 GB, i.e. 8 GB is expandable to 11 GB and 12 GB to 15 GB. This feature is available because fast memories are now available on the market; the performance of which is comparable to that of solid-state drives for a PC; and the speed of its operation allows it to keep up with RAM. Vivo says this technology allows the system to cache up to 20 apps simultaneously.
