Google Will Notify About Not Reliable Search Results

Google could beat Yahoo and other search engines at the very beginning and become the number one platform where people go for information due to relevant search results. But it’s not about relevancy only. The information should be reliable as well. For this, until recently, this search engine hadn’t done anything serious. But this is going to change.

According to Recode, Google is going to inform its users about the rapidly changing breaking news. The result page will put some badges for concrete search results such as “it looks like these results are changing quickly” and “if this topic is new, it can sometimes take time for results to be added by reliable sources.” Google suggests that likely users will come back later to check the results again for more reliable search results.

At the moment, these notifications appear only on US-based English-language results “when a topic is rapidly evolving and a range of sources hasn’t yet weighed in”. But they will appear in other markets in the coming months.

“While Google Search will always be there with the most useful results we can provide, sometimes the reliable information you’re searching for just isn’t online yet,” the company explains. “This can be particularly true for breaking news or emerging topics, when the information that’s published first may not be the most reliable.” Recode reported on the feature yesterday, following up on a tweet from Stanford Internet Observatory researcher Renee DiResta.

There Are Tons Of Examples

The best example of this could be the search result for “ufo filmed traveling 106 mph” with the warning label, as The Verge says. Just search for “ufo filmed traveling 106 mph”. One of the first results will be about a story happened in 2016 in Wales. But as you understand, this is not the story users are searching for now.

As Google search public liaison Danny Sullivan told Recode, “Someone had gotten this police report video released out in Wales, and it’s had a little bit of press coverage. But there’s still not a lot about it. But people are probably searching for it, they may be going around on social media. So we can tell it’s starting to trend. And we can also tell that there’s not a lot of necessarily great stuff that’s out there. And we also think that maybe new stuff will come along.”

Apart from this, Google was talking about misinformation spreading before the official statements. Moreover, if there is distrust towards the official statements, the situation will worsen. And many users think the platform where the misinformation spreads should take measures. For this problem, there is no certain approach yet. But the aforementioned notifications may help the cause.
