According to reports, TSMC will continue to produce the Bionic A15 processor for the iPhone 13 starting in August. Supply chain sources claim that Apple has ordered more than 100 million Bionic A15 processors from TSMC this year. This means that the first batch of Apple iPhone 13 series will exceed 100 million units. This is about 5% higher than the 95 million units initially predicted by analysts.
Back in July, there were reports that Apple is seeking a 20% increase in the production of the iPhone 13 series in 2021 to around 90 million units. Apple’s original plan was to produce 75 million units this year.
Apple has high hopes for the iPhone 13 series because it comes with some upgrades. For instance, it will come with a 120Hz high-refresh-rate LPTO screen that supports adaptive refresh rate adjustment. This series will also bring some upgrades to the camera department and it will reduce the notch for a better display effect. Furthermore, the iPhone 13 will come with higher batteries for all the models. This is another selling point for the iPhone 13 series.

Bionic A15 – widens the gap with its Android counterpart
The reports so far claim that the Bionic A15 processor will excel in overall performance. According to reports, the Apple Bionic A15 chip will adopt a design architecture of 2 large cores + 4 small cores in the CPU part. This will improve performance by 20% and energy efficiency by 30% relative to the A14 chip. On the GPU side, the A15 chip will adopt a 5-core architecture, which will increase the number of GPU cores. This will increase the performance by about 35% relative to the Bionic A14 processor.
Looking at the percentage improvement, the A15 is coming with a very significant improvement. This will further open up the performance gap with the Android camp. However, due to the poor heat dissipation performance of the iPhone, it is often difficult to achieve the full performance of the A-series processors.
Apple will also have more influence in the smartphone market due to the absence of Huawei. However, Apple will not want to take other Chinese manufacturers for granted.
IDC released a report on the market share of smartphones in the price segment above $600 in the first half of 2020. Among mobile phones exceeding $600, Huawei ranks first with 44.1%, and Apple ranks second with 44%. In the first quarter of this year, IDC released data on China’s market share in the price range above $550. Apple ranks first with a market share of 56.9%. Huawei still ranks second but its share dropped to 23.6%.
