Xiaomi revolutionized the smartphone market with the release of the first Mi MIX smartphone. The device came with a unique design favoring the screen-to-body ratio over anything else. It basically started a pursuit for the bezel-less design which other companies promptly followed. With the notch, waterdrop notch, and punch-hole advent, many companies achieved to deliver devices with minimal bezels. Xiaomi tried to go against the trends with the Mi MIX 3 and its sliding design. With Mix 3 mixed reception, the company decided to put the lineup to rest. After nearly three years, the Mix series is back with the Xiaomi Mi MIX 4.
The device takes the crown as Xiaomi’s most innovative smartphone to date. It’s the very first Xiaomi smartphone with an under-display camera and the very first device to come with the Snapdragon 888 Plus processor. Without further ado, let’s dive into the specs of this technological wonder.
Xiaomi Mi MIX 4
Display
As usual, the Xiaomi MIX 4 keeps display as one of its biggest appeals. The device features a curved 6.67-inch AMOLED display with a 10-bit TrueColor. Further, it sports a conventional Full HD+ resolution, offers a 120 Hz refresh rate and 480Hz touch-sampling rate. On top of the entire panel, we have Corning Gorilla Glass Victus coating.
The ground-breaking detail in this display is on its 20 MP selfie camera. This is an under-display camera which means that it’s invisible to the eyes and allows the company to finally deliver a true “bezel-free” or “cutout-free” experience. Xiaomi’s solution includes a new type of flexible display and redesigned circuit array. It works to maximize the transparency and in turn light reaching the selfie camera sensor.
The Chinese firm uses a micro-diamond pixel pattern paired with rethought algorithms ensuring minimum light refraction. Xiaomi is confident of its solution, and the camera’s portion of the display packs 400ppi density allowing perfect crispness. Therefore, the solution is basically invisible to untrained eyes.
Hardware
In terms of performance, the Xiaomi Mi MIX 4 is a flagship beyond the biggest majority of devices launched this year. The reason? The device is the very first smartphone to count with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888+. As usual, this chipset boosts the 2.84 GHz frequency on the regular SD888 to 2,995 GHz. The GPU is the Adreno 660 and the new SoC offers enhanced AI capabilities.
The device is paired with 8 GB or 12 GB of RAM and 128 GB or 512 GB of Internal Storage. The MIX 4 also has a heat dissipation structure with a combined surface area of 11588mm² to minimize overheating.
120W fast-charging and Ultra Wideband
Keeping the lights on, we have a 4,500 mAh battery that comes paired with a blazing fast 120W charging. This astonishing speed can top up the battery in just 15 minutes in boost mode and 21 minutes in default. If you don’t like wires, the device will still charge fastly enough through 50W wireless charging which can top the battery in 28 minutes while in boost mode. According to the company, the device comes with a charging modulation algorithm to regulate the charging temperature and speed for different scenarios. For instance, 37°C will be the maximum rear temperature while charging at 120W default mode.
The device comes with an Ultra-Wideband (UWB) which is an evolution for Bluetooth technology. It allows for precise positioning data and smart device controls. Moreover, the device comes with a Ceramic back that boosts antenna performance by using a unique interior metal case as an antenna amplifier. It offers 5G SA/NSA and has 19 antennas built-in and supports 42 bands with signal quality optimizations for 8 scenarios.
The device also comes with stereo speakers tuned by Harman / Kardon. Hence, users will certainly enjoy the experience of watching videos and playing games in this handset.
In terms of software, the MIX 4 runs Android 11-based MIUI 12.5 software. It should be one of the first smartphones to receive the upcoming MIUI 13 release.
Camera
The Xiaomi Mi MIX 4 comes with a squarish camera module comprising three modules. The first is a 1/1.33-inch 108 MP ISOCELL HMX main sensor with Optical Image Stabilization. It comes alongside an 8 MP periscope module with OIS and 5x Optical Zoom as well as 120mm equivalent focal length. Finally, we have a 13 MP ultrawide camera with a free-form lens and a reported 1% edge distortion.
For the selfies, we have the above-mentioned 20 MP under-display camera which offers 1.6 µm sized pixels with the 4-in-1 pixel binning technology.
Xiaomi Mi MIX 4 – Pricing and Availability
The MIX 4 comes in Black, White, and Gray colorways. The device starts at CNY 4,999 ($770) and goes all the way up to CNY 6,299 ($970) for the variant with 12 GB of RAM and 512GB Internal Storage. It will go on sale in China on August 16. However, it will likely hit other markets later this year. Xiaomi will detail availability in a near future.
