iOS 15

As expected, Apple used its “California Dreaming” September 14 event to reveal the new gang of iPhone 13 smartphones. In addition to this, the company also disclosed two new iPad, the new Apple Watch Series 7, and more. To celebrate the release, the company disclosed the launch date for the next big upgrade for its mobile operating systems. As per the company, iOS 15, the latest iteration of iPhone’s OS is coming on September 20. The confirmation comes straight from Apple’s own page for its mobile operating system. The new update includes important upgrades such as notification summaries, major improvements to its spotlight universal search, moveable and resizeable widgets for iPad, and more.

Below, you can check what iPhones will be eligible for this update. As usual, iOS will cover a wide plethora of older iPhones, and that still is the biggest advantage of Apple’s software. However, we always come back to the fact that it’s much simple to update a list of select smartphones than the wide myriad of Android smartphones for the various OEMs in the market.

Going for the iPhone list, we can see that Apple is covering iPhones that are officially over six-year-old. These devices will remain update until at least September 2022. Apple will probably move to iOS 16 and will likely drop every 2016 device. This cycle means that Apple is supporting its smartphones for at least seven years before dropping them. Again, this is significantly longer than the average Android OEM. Not even Google is an exception.

In recent years, Apple has been facing some controversy in regards to its iPhone lifespan. A few years ago, news broke out that Apple was degrading the performance of older generation iPhones knowingly, just to preserve battery life. In response, the company installed a new feature that allows users to choose whether to throttle performance for battery life or compromise battery for smooth performance on older iPhones. This feature will certainly be available with iOS 15.
