A couple of years ago, in July 2019, Netflix began offering a mobile-only plan in India. At INR199/month, Netflix subscribers could enjoy everything on mobile Netflix. The streaming service did this in order to increase its subscriber base. Today, the company made another movement for the same goal. It has announced price cuts in India for all of its plans. As Netflix’s official page reads, the lowest plan starts at INR149/month and goes up to INR649/month.

Now, Indian subscribers can get Netflix plans for lower prices. But the company hasn’t made any changes in what those plans offer. This simply means, by cutting the prices, it doesn’t cut its offers inside the plans.

Netflix India Rivals
Interestingly, one of the closest rivals of Netflix did the opposite in India. Yesterday, Amazon increased the price of its yearly Prime Membership from INR999 ($13/€12) to INR1,499 ($20/€17). This type of subscription offers access to Prime Video, Amazon Music, and Prime Reading. But we should also point out that Amazon India has plans at lower prices for those who don’t want an annual subscription. Say, there is a monthly plan priced at INR179 ($2.36/€2.09) and a quarterly plan that costs INR459 ($6.05/€5.35).
However, there is a real difference between these two. Unlike Netflix, the Amazon Prime membership plans don’t restrict video streaming quality. Moreover, there is a Prime Video Mobile Edition plan, which costs INR89 ($1.17/€1.04) per month. The latter only allows SD-quality playback.
As for the other competitors, Disney+ Hotstar is another big player in the OTT segment. In India, it offers three annual subscription plans- Mobile, Super, and Premium, priced at INR499 ($7/€6), INR899 ($12/€10), and INR1,499 ($20/€17), respectively. They all allow watching high-def videos. But there are pop-up ads with the Mobile and Super plans. As a reference, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video don’t have anything like that.
