The Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S22 FE could be powered by three different chips depending on the region. For the first time since 2011, Samsung would also rely on a chipset designed by Mediatek.

According to a new leak, it looks like Samsung is considering a drastic change in its SoC habits. To everyone’s surprise, the Seoul giant could rely on a chipset supplied by Mediatek, the specialist in entry-level and mid-range SoCs. In any case, this is reported by a reputable South Korean media, Business Korea.
Until now, Samsung has always turned to Qualcomm solutions and its Exynos chips to ensure the performance of its high-end smartphones. According to the report, the South Korean brand would also use a Mediatek chip on the upcoming Galaxy S22 FE, a fourth more affordable version of the range. The release of this phone will take place in early 2023.

For now, we do not know which Mediatek chip will choose Samsung. The firm should obviously rely on the most powerful solution from the chipmaker, whose chipsets have evolved significantly in recent months. According to figures relayed by Business Korea, Mediatek holds 26.3% of the smartphone chip market share in 2021, behind Qualcomm (37.7%), but far ahead of Samsung (6.6%). On the other hand, Mediatek is lagging behind on the high end. 95% of its sales are mid-range and entry-level phones.
According to the media, smartphones with SoC Mediatek will only be available in Asian markets. In Europe and the United States, Samsung should continue to rely on Qualcomm solutions and Exynos chipsets of its own.
For the record, the last time that Samsung used 3 different chips on the Galaxy S range dates back to 2011. It was then the Galaxy S2. Since then, the manufacturer has been content with a Qualcomm or Exynos chip, depending on the region.
