Many top brands from various fields are doing their best to protect the environment. This is also true for automakers. For instance, recently, BMW announced that it is working to eliminate waste ocean plastic. The company plans to use plastic trim parts starting from the Neue Klasse pure electric car that will be launched in 2025. What’s more interesting, more than 30% of the raw materials will come from recycled materials, such as fishing nets and ropes.

According to the company, BMW and its partners will actively purchase and recycle them in ports worldwide. After processing, the company will use them for interior and exterior trim parts of vehicles. In effect, BMW will be able to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 25%.

BMW Uses Recycled Materials For Various Parts
In fact, this is not the first time when BMW has used recycled materials in its cars. For instance, the carbon fiber chassis of BMW’s i3 pure electric car uses some recycled materials in the production process. Moreover, the factories that produce these materials are powered by wind and hydroelectric power.
In addition, BMW recently announced that it will use new vegan interiors on BMW and MINI models starting from 2023. The company will use those materials for the steering wheel and other parts. In other words, it will replace leather and synthetic leather. “The new steering wheel surface material reduces CO2e emissions along the value chain by around 85 percent compared to leather.”
Not only that, according to BMW CEO Oliver Zipse, all new BMW models will use recycled materials by 2025. Starting in 2025, the company will use more metals, plastics, and wood in order to reduce the carbon footprint of vehicle production.
However, we haven’t heard that other bigwigs in the car industry, such as Mercedes Benz and Audi, have issued similar statements.
