Today, MediaTek released a new mid-range chip Dimensity 1080 SoC. The predecessor of this chip is the Dimensity 920. The new Dimensity 1080 comes with higher performance. It also offers better efficiency and enhanced camera capabilities. Regarding the MediaTek Dimensity 1080, here is what the company has to say
“The Dimensity 1080 continues the performance and energy-efficient technology advantages of MediaTek’s Dimensity 5G mobile platform. It provides a variety of advanced features to better meet users’ expectations for 5G smartphones. MediaTek Dimensity 1080 further enhances the performance in imaging, display and other aspects. This will help the terminal to quickly launch into the mass market.”
Dimensity 1080 specifications
The most important change here is the chip’s camera capabilities. The new MediaTek Dimensity 1080 can process image data from the sensor through the Imagiq ISP. It can process up to 200MP pixels (previously 108MP). This device also supports quad cameras. Dimensity 1080 integrates a hardware-level 4K HDR video recording engine. This helps the chip to provide better low-light shooting effects.
Gizchina News of the week
The performance of this 5G chip slightly upgrades with an octa-core CPU. It uses 2 ARM Cortex-A78 cores, clocking up to 2.6GHz. It also has 6 ARM Cortex-A55 cores, with frequencies up to 2GHz. The GPU is still Mali-G68. This chip provides a smoother experience in applications such as gaming, streaming media playback, and web browsing. The chip also comes with LPDDR5 memory and UFS 3.1 storage modules. The Dimensity 1080 still uses TSMC’s 6nm process. This process has better energy efficiency and can extend the battery life of smartphones. Performance-wise, there may not be a noticeable jump in benchmark scores.
MediaTek Dimensity 1080 supports MediaTek HyperEngine 3.0 game engine. This can bring a high-performance, low-latency gaming experience. With the help of MediaTek’s third generation APU, the chip’s energy efficiency during gaming is better. In addition, Dimensity 1080 supports sub-6GHz 5G full-band high-speed networks. It also supports Wi-Fi 6 connection. Smartphones with this chip should launch in Q4 2022.
Redmi Note 12 to debut this chip
According to popular tech blogger @DCS, the Redmi Note 12 will be the first device to use this chip. This device will officially arrive before the Chinese 11.11 sales. According to Xiaomi, the Redmi Note 12 will be one of its best sellers in this year’s 11.11 sales. A recent teaser from Redmi’s general manager, Lu Weibing reveals that a strong product is coming.
The Redmi Note 12 passed the Chinese 3C listing back in September. The listing reveals that this device will use a maximum 67W MDY-12-EF charger. In addition, the charge capacity of the Redmi Note 12 Pro and Pro+ is 120W and 210W. Unfortunately, there is not much information regarding this device.
I am eagerly waiting for this Mediatek SoC to launch in the upcoming smartphones.
This Dimensity 1080 5G chipset has been built on TSMC’s 6nm fabrication process.
