Chinese manufacturer, Xiaomi, is a long-standing leader in the Indian smartphone market. However, it recently lost some ground and Samsung took the No. 1 spot in the Indian smartphone market. A recent report from Canalys reveals that Xiaomi now ranks first in the Indian smartphone market. The company ranks first for the third quarter of 2022. The Chinese manufacturer shipped 9.2 million units in Q3 with a 21% market share.

In addition to Xiaomi, Samsung, Vivo, and OPPO rank second, third and fourth respectively. These brands shipped 8.1 million units (18%), 7.3 million units (16%), and 7.1 million units (16%), respectively. However, Realme fell to fifth with only 6.2 million units (14%) of shipment. India’s smartphone shipments in the third quarter of 2022 were 44.6 million units. This is a 6% decrease relative to the previous year. The reason for the decline is the lack of success in the low-end market.

Canalys analyst, Sanyam Chaurasia points out that the market contribution of entry-level devices fell this year, hit by inflation, while the mid-to-high-end segment performed relatively better due to aggressive promotions. OnePlus and iQOO were two important brands driving the growth of mid-end mobile phone sales in e-commerce channels during this period. Flagship models, especially older generation flagships, have also experienced strong demand momentum after price cuts. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3, Galaxy S22 series, and Apple iPhone 13 tops the flagship list in India.

Xiaomi slips to Samsung

Xiaomi dropped to the number two spot in India in March 2022 after topping the market for several consecutive quarters. Samsung took the top spot but its victory was short-lived. Xiaomi sells value-for-money smartphones in India. The company’s strategy is to offer handsets at affordable prices in India. Now, this master plan has been doing wonders for the company. As a result, Xiaomi has been leading India’s market share for a long time. Xiaomi has been leading the Indian smartphone industry since 2017. Samsung surpassed Xiaomi in Q3 of 2020. However, Samsung couldn’t retain the No. 1 position in 2021. Last year, Xiaomi regained its lead.
