Chinese display maker, BOE, has been doing all it can to fully enter into Apple’s supply chain. The company started off as a brand that provides replacement screens for iPhones. Subsequently, it supplied displays for the iPhone 14 series but its share was only 6% which is far lower than Samsung and LG Display. Ming-Chi Kuo, a well-known analyst, now claims that BOE’s shipments of iPhone displays will increase rapidly in 2023. He reveals that it will beat Samsung and LG Display to become the largest display supplier for the iPhone.
BOE’s 2023 iPhone display shipments will increase rapidly. According to the latest survey, BOE has already beaten Samsung to obtain most of the display orders for the new iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus in 2023. If there are no problems in subsequent production, BOE will become the largest screen supplier for iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus in 2023, accounting for about 70%.
Gizchina News of the week
In the battle for the iPhone 14 screen, Samsung almost monopolizes the supply of screens for the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max. Samsung exclusively has display orders for Apple’s high-end phones. BOE and LG Display only have display orders for the standard version of the iPhone 14.
BOE expects to increase shipments of LTPO display screens for Apple’s high-end mobile phones in 2024. If it can break Samsung’s monopoly on iPhone high-end display screens and obtain 20%~30% of the order volume, it can maintain its own low-end display screen shipments for iPhones. If 70% of screen shipments are made, BOE will become the largest display supplier for the iPhone in 2024.
Editor’s comment:
Apple will like to stick with BOE for multiple reasons. Relying on Samsung is not good for business and Apple knows this. If it has an alternative that is nearly as good as Samsung, then Apple will take its chances. Also, BOE’s displays are cheaper relative to displays from Samsung and LG. With the growing competition in the mobile phone market, Apple is trying to avoid price increases. Thus, if BOE’s displays are doing well (no complaints so far) and it has the capacity, Apple will key in.
