The market of desktop GPUs is booming and the competition strikes. While NVIDIA keeps its top position on the premium market with the RTX 4090 series, AMD is exploring alternative segments offering specs and affordability. Today, the company is presenting a powerful graphics card in the form of the Radeon RX 7900 GRE. It is being announced in China, however, global availability is on the cards.
AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE – A Toned-Down 7900 XT
The RX 7900 GRE (Golden Rabbit Edition) is a cut-down version of the RX 7900 XT with some minor reductions to the GPU and significant reductions in the memory. Comparing the GPU with the complete RX 7900 XT, the XT has 84 Computing Units and the GRE has 80. The game clock of the XT is 2000 MHz, whereas the GRE has 1,880 MHz. The 20 GB 20Gbps 320-bit memory drops down to 16 GB 18Gbps 256-bit. That difference causes the memory bandwidth to drop from 800 GB/s to 576 GB/s. The board power has been reduced from 315W to 260W.
AMD positions the 7900 GRE more as a 1440p card instead of 4K. The company’s marketing material also pits it as a successor for the 6800 XT with the two being directly compared. This means it will have a similar performance to the RTX 4070. Right now, the AMD 7900 GRE price is set at CNY 5,299 in China, but it also has a determined $649 US price. As we’ve said before, the new GPU will be available globally soon. However, there is still no exact that for that.

The AMD 7900 GRE will be available from PowerColor, Sapphire, and XFX along with a reference AMD model. The product went on sale in China on July 28, but there is no word on when it will be available globally and whether it will have the same name.
The AMD 7900 GRE and Its Market Position
The AMD 7900 GRE is $200 US cheaper than the $849 of the RX 7900 XT and 400 RMB cheaper than the Chinese MSRP of the 7900 XT. With that price, the card actually looks very competitive against the RTX 4070 which retails for $599 US but custom models are priced closer to the $650 US price range. According to the experts from Expreview, the card severely lags behind the Radeon RX 7900 XT and consumes almost the same level of power. While the card may not be the same level of value in the Chinese market, it has the potential to be a great alternative to the RTX 4070 from NVIDIA.
Besides the review, AMD also brings its own official numbers of the Radeon RX 7900 GRE with the card tested on the 1440p Max settings across various titles. Below, you can see the average FPS you can expect from the card on some popular games:

Considering that AMD is aiming to launch the Radeon RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT GPUs around September, it may bring the GRE to global markets at the same date.
