Google is currently rolling out a couple of new features for its Messages. These will land on users’ devices in the coming days. Among the new features of Google Messages is the ability to change the chat bubble colors. It basically adds a layer of customization to the look and feel of the messaging app.
But there’s a caveat. The Google Messages chat bubble color customization only works on RCS. At least, it’s currently limited to RCS, and Google hasn’t said anything about it being available for non-RCS configuration. That is, SMS/MMS conversations don’t have the feature yet.

Once your device gets the new Google Messages update for chat color customization, you should see a new option called “Change Colors.” It will be available when you press the three-dot overflow menu. Yes, it’s the same three-dot icon that’s present in the top-right corner of all the conversations.

Upon pressing, the Google Messages app launches a UI. In that, you can choose between nine different color options. Among them is the default Dynamic Color option. The app also offers you a sample thread, which gives you a preview of the color options you are planning to set.
Now, you may be wondering why this color customization feature of Messages isn’t available for SMS/MMS conversations. Google previously mentioned that the bubble theming is synced between the sender and the receiver. This syncing requires an internet connection, which eventually makes RCS a requirement.
That said, color customization isn’t the only new feature of Google Messages. It also got Photomoji, Voice Moods, improved audio quality, reaction effects, and many others.
