Huawei HarmonyOS Next

In a significant development today, Huawei unveiled its latest operating system, HarmonyOS NEXT, in a press conference held in China. Distinguishing itself from the conventional HarmonyOS, this new iteration departs from the Android AOSP foundation and is incompatible with Android and its applications. Described by its creators as “pure-blooded Harmony,” it is constructed upon the Harmony kernel and exclusively utilizes applications crafted for its unique architecture.

HarmonyOS NEXT: Huawei’s New Operating System without Android

During the press conference, Yu Chengdong emphasized the superiority of the HarmonyOS kernel over traditional kernels, presumably including Linux, asserting its adaptability across a diverse range of devices and scenarios. Noteworthy is the fact that HarmonyOS is a comprehensive operating system, encompassing self-developed components from the programming language to the compiler.

The unveiled structure of HarmonyOS NEXT includes an integrated AI model, Pangu, collaborating with the MindSpore framework. Development and programming environments, a compiler (Ark Compiler), and programming languages (ArkTS/Cangjie) complement the kernel (HarmonyOS) and file system (EROFS/HMDFS).

Also, Huawei shared that over 200 apps are currently in development for HarmonyOS NEXT. With more than 60 development teams dedicated to game development, resulting in over 70 games under production. Projections suggest that by the year-end, there will be over 5,000 applications available for HarmonyOS NEXT.

It is noteworthy that HarmonyOS NEXT is strategically designed with a focus on the Chinese market, where Huawei holds a formidable position. In light of the success of flagship models like the Mate 60 and nova 12 lines, Huawei’s partners actively engage in the development process. Acknowledging the company’s complete departure from Android. Analysts anticipate that by the end of the year, HarmonyOS could surpass iOS. Emerging as the second-most-prevalent mobile operating system in China after Android, owing to the vast market capacity.

Currently, the closed beta version of HarmonyOS NEXT is accessible for Huawei Mate 60, Mate 60 Pro, and Mate X5. With the final release expected in the third quarter of 2024. Huawei’s foray into this self-contained operating system marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of mobile technology. Showcasing the company’s commitment to innovation and independence from established platforms.
