Nintendo Switch 2 Confirmed, But The Launch Will Take Some Time

Nintendo Switch OLED gaming console

There have been multiple reports about the Nintendo Switch 2 recently. However, the company has remained relatively quiet about the new gaming handheld since the launch of the Switch OLED. Well, that has changed today, as Nintendo has officially confirmed that the successor is on its way.

As the company announced on X (link), it will be announcing the Switch 2 “within this fiscal year.” That means the next gaming handheld from the company should be fully unveiled within March of next year. This also means we might not see the company talking about it during the upcoming Nintendo Direct event.

Of course, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa gave us a hint about when Switch 2 could hit the market. During a shareholder meeting, Furukawa said that the release would be before April of next year. This aligns with the timeline mentioned above.

More About Nintendo Direct and Nintendo Switch 2

In the official announcement, Nintendo noted that the original Switch was announced back in March 2015. Since then, we have seen the release of the Switch Lite and Switch OLED. Both of them came with the same core hardware, which means they didn’t bring an improvement over the regular version.

While the expectations about the Nintendo Switch 2 aren’t high, it will definitely be an upgrade over the original. We are getting a good number of reports on the hardware. One of the recent reports suggested that the gaming handheld could hit 4 Teraflops in docked mode. To compare, the current handheld can offer 1 Teraflop of performance. But these reports are all over the place. So, we advise taking them with a generous amount of salt.

Getting back to the Nintendo Direct event, the company says that it will be mostly about the games that will be launching in the second half of this year. We should be getting more details soon. So stay tuned!
