On Friday, Apple made a major announcement that could come as a blow to iOS users in the European market. Apple is currently working on three new features for its iOS18 and macOS Sequoia. Apple will make these new features available to all users except users in the European Union.
According to Bloomberg, Apple Intelligence, iPhone Mirroring to macOS Sequoia, and SharePlay Screen Sharing will not be available in the European Union. Due to regulatory concerns and compliance with the Digital Markets Act, Apple indicated that these features won’t be available to EU customers at all this year.
This could come as a very disappointing news for EU Apple customers, as these features are some of the most significant improvements Apple unveiled at WWDC.
Apple Intelligence and iPhone Mirroring
Apple Intelligence is a significant new initiative that includes a suite of AI-powered features. These features include writing tools, Image Playgrounds, notification summaries, quick replies, and more. Additionally, there will be a major revamp to the Siri virtual assistant.

iPhone Mirroring on the other hand is a very exciting feature which is coming with the macOS Sequoia. This new feature allows users to see a live interactive screen of the iPhone on the Mac display. With this feature, users can be able to use their devices on the Mac without necessarily handling the iPhone. Notifications from the iPhone will also display on the Mac display.
Apple SharePlay Screen Sharing
Share your screen during FaceTime calls: This will allow you to share what’s on your iPhone or iPad screen with others on a FaceTime call. This could be useful for showing someone photos, apps, websites, or even giving them a live walkthrough of how to do something on their device.
Potentially request control: There are rumors that SharePlay might allow the other person on the call to request control of your device. This would be useful for troubleshooting tech issues with a friend or family member. However, it’s important to note that Apple hasn’t confirmed this functionality yet.
End-to-end encryption: Just like FaceTime calls themselves, SharePlay is expected to use end-to-end encryption, meaning your screen content is only visible to the participants on the call and isn’t stored by Apple.
The interoperability requirements enforced by the Digital Markets Act are somewhat unclear regarding these new features. However, Apple stated that complying with these requirements would compromise “privacy and security.” Apple is yet to announce a release date for the EU. For now, these features will not be available to Europe.
