Samsung’s Patent Reveals a Device Like the LG Wing

Samsung is one of the most successful companies in the foldable smartphone segment. While OEMs are trying to adapt to this trend and launch their foldable devices, Korean firms are now trying different kinds of devices and new form factors for their display tech. Today, a patent was discovered by the folks of MySmartPrice on the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) website. It appears to be a smartphone that reminds the LG Wing, one of LG’s most intriguing devices that arrived before the company’s demise in the smartphone business.

The patent sketch shows a device with a hinge and a design reminiscent of the LG Wing. The device initially appears as a standard glass slab. However, it can swivel and rotate like the LG Wing, this movement reveals a secondary display at the bottom. Additionally, the screen can be with the help of a hinge. The patent indicates that the device will feature a camera island in the top right corner. It also shows the charging port, microphone, and speakers at the bottom.

Going by the patent, the device does look and works like the LG Wing when it comes to rotation. Beyond that, the device will be able to bend thanks to the hinge mechanism. This particular design will provide users with a full-sized display to work with, along with a smaller area at the bottom for control.

It is worth noting that this isn’t Samsung’s first foray into different display technology. The company, for instance, had multiple patents spotted showing smartphones with triple-foldable displays. It has also been said to be working on rollable display technology. Unfortunately, none of these innovative devices has seen the light of the day. That said, the new patent does not necessarily mean we are near to seeing a device like this hitting the shelves. Samsung frequently files patent applications to protect its ideas for future use. Only time will tell if we’ll see another device like the LG Wing.
