Snapdragon 8 Gen 5: New Leak Teases Performance Cores with 5GHz

As the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is about to become a reality, the leaks will move a new leak from a reliable Weibo source has begun to reveal details about its successor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5. According to the leak, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 will maintain the same core configuration as its predecessor, featuring 2 performance cores and 6 efficiency cores. However, what sets it apart is a notable increase in clock speeds, which could result in a significant performance boost. This suggests that Qualcomm is focusing on squeezing even more power out of the 8 Gen 5 while keeping the efficient core setup that balances performance and energy consumption.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 Could Begin a New Era for Mobile SoCs

According to the leak, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5’s performance cores, has the “Pegasus” codename. It will come with an impressive 5.0 GHz clock speed. Even the efficiency cores will run at a notable 4.0 GHz. If these numbers hold, they represent a significant leap from the clock speeds of the Gen 4. This one will have performance cores at 4.32 GHz and efficiency cores at 3.53 GHz.

However, there could be a caveat. The leak subtly suggests that these impressive clock speeds might be exclusive to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 variant using TSMC’s advanced N3P manufacturing process. This indicates that the chipset’s performance could vary depending on the production node. The TSMC variant might offer the highest speeds and efficiency.

Qualcomm has previously indicated that it will employ a dual-sourcing strategy for the SD8 Gen 5. Hence, it will leverage both TSMC and Samsung Foundry for production. This means we will likely see another version of the chip for Samsung’s Galaxy devices. These will likely come with Samsung’s SF2 node.

While the clock speeds for the Samsung-manufactured version remain under wraps, leaks are suggesting that Samsung’s SF2 node could deliver comparable performance to TSMC’s N3P process. This could imply that the SD8 Gen 5 produced by Samsung might not only match but could potentially exceed the performance levels of its TSMC counterpart.

That said, it’s still early to fully delve into the SD8 Gen 5. Qualcomm is currently concentrating on finalizing its flagship SoC for 2025, the SD8 Gen 4. This leaves ample opportunity for details about its successor to evolve and change before its official release. However, if the leak proves to be accurate, the Qualcomm SD8 Gen 5 could provide a substantial performance boost over the SD8 Gen 4.
