Samsung Sets New Benchmark with First 24Gb GDDR7 DRAM

Samsung has launched the world’s first 24-gigabit GDDR7 DRAM, setting a new standard in memory technology. This advanced memory is built for the high demands of next-generation technology, such as data centers and AI workstations, where faster processing and greater capacity are essential.

Samsung’s Latest Memory Marvel: the 24Gb GDDR7 DRAM

The GDDR7 DRAM offers speeds of 40 gigabits per second (Gbps), which is 25% faster than the previous GDDR6 model. This speed boost is made possible by new technology, including PAM3 (Pulse Amplitude Modulation 3-level) signaling, which allows for quicker data transfers. This makes the GDDR7 ideal for applications that need rapid processing, like AI and high-performance computing.

Samsung has also focused on improving energy efficiency. By using power-saving technology from their mobile devices, the GDDR7 reduces energy use by over 30%. This is particularly important for data centers and AI systems, where cutting energy consumption can reduce costs and environmental impact. The GDDR7 not only offers better performance but also helps lower operational expenses and supports sustainability efforts.

To ensure reliable performance at high speeds, Samsung has introduced power-gating technology. This feature helps minimize energy loss and prevents potential problems caused by high-speed operations, ensuring the memory remains stable and efficient under heavy workloads.

The company plans to test this new memory with major AI computing customers by the end of this year. Full commercial production will begin in early 2025.

YongCheol Bae, Executive Vice President of Memory Product Planning at Samsung, highlighted that this innovation strengthens Samsung’s leadership in the graphics DRAM market. After launching the first 16Gb GDDR7 last year, Samsung is now advancing with the 24Gb GDDR7. This memory uses Samsung’s 5th-generation 10-nanometer technology, increasing capacity by 50% while keeping the same size as before.

In conclusion, Samsung’s 24Gb GDDR7 DRAM is a big step forward in memory technology. It offers faster speeds, improved energy efficiency, and reliable performance. This memory will be crucial for the future of AI, data centers, and high-performance computing.
