Google Messages is once again revamping its text field design after several previous attempts. The latest beta version (20241202_01_RC00) introduces a fresh layout aimed at improving usability and addressing user concerns about the cluttered interface. Here’s a breakdown of what’s new and how it could impact the user experience.
Previous Design Changes
At the start of 2024, Google introduced a pill-shaped text field. It placed buttons for emoji, Magic Compose, Gallery, and the Plus menu from left to right. The Voice Message button was separate on the right and turned into the Send button when you typed.
Users found this layout awkward. So, Google went back to an older design with three side-by-side buttons for Plus, Gallery, and Magic Compose. However, this version also felt cramped, especially on the left side. Many users complained about the crowded layout.
The New Design
The latest beta brings a cleaner look. The text field is now left-aligned. The Plus button stays on the far left, making it easy to find. Next are the Magic Compose, Emoji, and Gallery buttons. The Voice Memo and Send button remain separate on the right.
When you start typing, the app hides most buttons, leaving only the Plus and Emoji options. This simple layout reduces clutter and helps you focus on your message.
Some users hope Google will bring back the Magic Compose/Rewrite option in the smart reply row. This could make the text field even cleaner.
Other Changes: Read Receipts
The update also includes a redesign of read receipts. They now appear in the main message list but not inside chats. This might be a bug since the feature is still in testing.
Google Messages continues to improve with each update. The new design looks promising, but it’s unclear if it will roll out to everyone soon. If you want to try it, the beta is available now. Google is working hard to make the app simpler and more user-friendly.
