Pete Saladino, Head of Marketing at Skylo, shared details with Mobile World Live. When there is no cellular signal, both the Galaxy S25 and Pixel 9 automatically switch to satellite mode using Skylo’s software. Skylo’s ground stations connect to multiple satellite providers, allowing the phones to link to the strongest signal available across the U.S. and Canada.

Emergency SOS via Satellite

The Galaxy S25’s emergency SOS feature includes three key functions:

  1. Contact Emergency Services – Users can send emergency messages when no cellular service is available.
  2. Location Sharing with Garmin – Sends GPS coordinates to Garmin’s emergency response team.
  3. Two-Way Messaging – Allows users to receive updates and communicate with responders.

To use the service, users need to go outside with a clear view of the sky. The phone then asks about the emergency and requests details. The first message takes about three to four seconds to send. Responses typically arrive within five to six seconds.

Samsung vs. Google: What’s Different?

Both brands use Skylo’s technology, but Google offers an additional feature. The Pixel 9 includes a green arrow in its interface, guiding users on where to face for the best signal. Samsung’s version lacks this feature. More details about Samsung’s interface are expected soon.

The Future of Satellite Communication

Skylo is expanding its satellite services. Future updates will include SMS and voice call capabilities. This follows T-Mobile’s plans for satellite texting and upcoming voice-calling features.

So, with satellite connectivity now in major smartphones, mobile communication is becoming more reliable. These advancements help users stay connected in remote areas, improving safety and accessibility.
