Google Prepares Gemini AI for Android Auto with Live Mode

Google is working on adding Gemini AI to Android Auto. It is also developing Gemini Live, a more conversational version of the AI assistant. This is part of Google’s ongoing plan to replace Google Assistant with Gemini across its devices and services.

Gemini is already available on smartphones and is coming to Google TV, smart speakers, and Wear OS. Earlier this year, there were hints that Gemini would be integrated into Android Auto. Now, new findings confirm that Google is making significant progress in bringing AI to cars.

According to Android Authority, developers have enabled an early version of Gemini on Android Auto. The feature is still in its early stages and requires further optimization. However, Google is also working on Gemini Live, which is designed to offer a more natural and interactive AI experience while driving.

Gemini Live is a highly conversational assistant that can handle interruptions. This makes it a useful co-pilot for drivers, as they can talk to it just like they would with a passenger. Instead of relying on basic voice commands, drivers can have a dynamic conversation with Gemini Live to:

  • Ask for directions and real-time traffic updates
  • Get personalized travel tips based on their location
  • Control music, podcasts, and other media hands-free
  • Send and read messages more naturally

If Gemini Live integrates with Google Maps and media apps, it could enhance the driving experience even further. Additionally, Google may include Astra’s memory capabilities, which could help store important travel details. Some speculate it could work similarly to Google’s old dashcam feature for Pixel phones, but nothing has been confirmed yet.

Currently, Gemini Live shows up as a button on Android Auto. When enabled, it takes the place of the media widget on the dashboard. Since the feature is still being tested, Google may change its design or functionality before launch. More details about Gemini AI and Live Mode should arrive soon.
