For over 36 hours, users of Google Chromecast (2nd Gen) and Chromecast Audio have faced an outage. They cannot cast content to their devices. Frustrated users have flooded online forums with complaints. Google has acknowledged the issue and is working on a fix. However, the company warns against performing a factory reset. Doing so may make the situation worse.
Google Chromecast Outage: What You Need to Know
The issue started late Sunday night. Users received an error message saying, “Untrusted device: [name] couldn’t be verified. This could be caused by outdated device firmware.” The affected Chromecasts also appear as “offline” in the Google Home app.
Many tried troubleshooting steps like restarting their Wi-Fi or rebooting the Chromecast. Nothing worked. Some attempted a factory reset, but this only made things worse. Once reset, the device remains unusable until Google provides a fix.
Temporary Workaround Suggested by Users
A Reddit user suggested a possible workaround. They advised resetting the Chromecast and manually changing the phone’s date to before March 9, 2025. This method worked for some but is not an official fix.
Google, however, has strongly advised against a factory reset. Unfortunately, this warning came nearly 20 hours after the outage began. Many users had already reset their devices, making the problem worse.
The Cause: Expired Certificate
Reddit user u/Indianb0y017 believes the issue is due to an expired Certificate Authority (CA). This certificate, originally valid for 10 years, expired on March 9, 2025. Because of this, Google’s servers can no longer verify older Chromecasts. This leads to the casting errors users are facing.
When Will Google Fix It?
Google has confirmed it is working on a solution. However, there is no clear timeline. The Reddit user who identified the certificate issue suggests it could take up to a week.
For now, users should avoid factory resets and wait for further instructions. The outage has already lasted too long. Hopefully, Google will fix it soon. We will keep updating as new information emerges.
