LG G3 to reportedly feature a MediaTek MT6595 SoC, QHD display

2560 x 1440 pixel displays are fast becoming the standard for any flagship this year. Two of China’s biggest manufacturers, OPPO and Vivo have already made their intentions clear about having QHD phones on the market, and it is just about time that other internationally renown ones like LG up the ante as well.

While the company might already have released a feature packed smartphone this year in the form of the LG G Pro 2, there’s still a flagship that’s due — the LG G3, successor to the widely popular G2. According to various leaks and spy info, the G3 will almost certainly pack a 2560 x 1440p display akin to the upcoming OPPO Find 7, which isn’t as much of a surprise as the processor it is tipped to feature — one that comes from MediaTek. While this cannot be confirmed or denied at the moment, it is being said that the G3 will feature the LTE enabled MediaTek MT6595 which comes with 4x 2.2-2.5GHz Cortex A17 plus 4x 1.7GHz Cortex A7 cores on board.

Gizchina News of the week

If true, LG would be playing a gamble of sorts, since the MT6595 is one chipset with a lot of promise, but there isn’t a lot that’s known about the chipset at the moment. Other than that, the G3 looks super fine with the reported QHD panel, which lacks on the recently released Samsung Galaxy S5.

I doubt the LG G3 will change the soc from a Qualcom to an MTK but it would be an interesting twist if that is indeed true.

MT 6595 will probably be faster than Snapdragon 805. It’s set to use 4xA17 cores at 2.2GHz which are as fast as 4xS4 (krait) cores at 2.7GHz (which will be what S805 will use), but additional to those it will use 4 A7 cores which would catapult its Antutu scores close to mid 40000.

I doubt Snapdragon will post such performance, either in real life applications or benchmarks. Unless Qualcomm is readying something to blow us out of the water they should be ready to be a follower rather than a leader in performance (and possibly sales).

Good move from LG to choose the new kings of performance.

I didn’t say that the MTK will be slower or less powerfull. Something that might be a problem for a big manufacturer like LG is the slow support of MTK socs that creates difficulties in upgrading. For example the 6589 does not support until now android 4.3-4.4. Lets hope tha mediatek will improve in this aspect. 😉

IMHO Omni ROM which is Android 4.4 KitKat was recently ported on FAEA F2S which has an MT6589T chipset so given that I do hope that MT6589 chipsets does support later versions of Android its just the lack of support and release of kernel builds from MTK that’s lacking

Even this port is not functional. They just got it to boot and are trying to resolve many problems of the rom. Of course without the help of mediatek this is a really difficult task.

Maybe LG got a great offer from MTK to use their socs.

    that would be great!
Mediateks are already very fast and at the same time very cheap (several 8cores implementations under 200$)
If LG show this much trust to 6595 (first MT’s LTE soc) means that the new cpu
is even better than we think.

Mediatek chips have fully functional MHL and OTG functionality.

lg would definitely put that in too considering its their flagship

    Only a rumor…

This sounds promising, but it also plays towards one of LG’s bad habits. They like to lock their bootloaders and block AOSP based ROMs.

So far the only company that’s done the work to port CM or Omni ROM to MediaTek hardware is Faea.

Also, while MediaTek is quick with hardware development, they’re SLOW releasing Android driver updates, which is why all the MediaTek phones are running 4.2 instead of 4.4!
