While the recently released Ascend P7 remains a Cat. 4 4G phone, Huawei plans to release a Cat 6 enabled phone later this year.
Speaking to uswitch, the President of Huawei’s European Consumer Division Richard Ren stated that “in the coming second half of the year, we will launch the Cat6 smartphone.”
Cat 6 is the next standard for 4G enabled phones. As opposed to Cat 4 phones like the Ascend P7 which can get upto 150mbps, Cat 6 phones are theoretically capable of downloading at 300mbps.
Back in late April, Huawei announced that they had achieved Cat 6 connectivity with the help of Qualcomm and their SingleRAN technology. Their latest generation 4G LTE modem, the Gobi 9×35 already supports the technology. It makes use of 40Hz frequency to achieve its 300mbps maximum speed. Getting that technology into a phone this quickly will be an impressive feat if they pull it off.

Ren didn’t get into specifics about which phones would support the new connectivity, but the unnamed phone would be among the world’s fastest.
Qualcomm also announced new Cat 6 CPUs but they aren’t due out until 2016 at the earliest.
We will have more on next generation cellular networks as the technology develops.
