Bluboo X2 review, a very cheap octacore for only $150

The old saying goes, “if it’s sounds too good to be true it probably is”, and usually this is correct for most things, but there are “exceptions to every rule” and the $150 octacore Bluboo X2 is certainly one of them!

We all do it, we see a phone, check the price and automatically think it can’t be good as it is so cheap then move on. Well that’s the case for some consumers and it is a habit they are going to have to get themselves out of. Early today we posted benchmarks from 3 phones that cost only $320, and those a flagship beasts! But what about the more affordable side of the spectrum? Can a phone costing only $150 be any good? We think yes it can, and the octacore Bluboo X2 is a very good example.

What does $150 get you these days? Well you can have a look at the detailed specs in the table below, but the highlights of the Blueboo X2 include an octacore MT6592 Mediatek processor, 5-inch 720p display and fairly decent cameras!

Bluboo X2 review – Design

It is clear from the design of the phone that Bluboo’s designers have taken a large chunk of inspiration from current Oppo phones. The X2 looks like an Oppo Find 7 with some of it’s features removed and a metal edge. The metal sides are where the SIM tray is located, which has room for 2 x SIM cards. Construction is mostly plastic which keeps the weight down and also keeps the price low.

The front of the phone is almost fully covered by the glass of the 5-inch HD display,and the back is all made of plastic and is also where the main  camera, the LED flash and the external speaker are located. In the front, is a 2 mega-pixel camera,  proximity sensors, LED notification light and on the chin the usual 3 capacitative buttons that are illuminated.

In the box, Bluboo also supply a clear hard protective case that will help you from scratching or marking the phone.

Bluboo X2 review – Display

Just a few years ago and 720p would have been the resolution we would see on top of the range phones. For the past few years though 1080p has been the choice of many manufactures, and some have even started going for 2K displays. Unless you have the eyes of a hawk, or you are going above 5-inch in diameter however, 720p is pretty darn good. The 5-inch display of the Blueboo X2 sits right on that mark, and while it isn’t as crystal clear as a 2560 x 1440 Vivo Xplay 3S, is is hardly bad.

Resolution is only part of the puzzle, viewing indoors is fine, direct sunlight does have you squint (but that’s true for many screens) and touch response is spot on.

Bluboo X2 review – Camera

13 mega-pixel on a $150 smartphone! That alone would be enought for most customers to stop their quest and buy the Blueboo on the spot. But check again and you will see that the rear camera sensor is actually an 8 mega-pixel sensor and the software interplots the images to 13 mega-pixel. Still this is only a $150 phone, and some last generation smartphones like the Meizu MX3 and iPhone 5S have 8MP shooters.

Bluboo X2 review – Performance

The octacore Mediatek MT6592 has proven itself to be a good performer. It might not be as powerful as a Snapdragon 801, but at this price you can hardly expect it to. 1GB RAM is the only real issue, with 2GB the phone could really come alive and be a competent mutli-tasker. As it stands, the X2 performs well, even with good benchmarks, you will just be clearning your running apps more often than on some phones.

Bluboo X2 Review – Conclusion

In my opinion I can recommend this phone as the quality is much better than expected for the price, we are talking about $150 (shipped internationally) for a phone with octacore processor, quality cameras, HD display and good design.

The Oppo like design helps to give the phone a comfortable profile that is equally at home in your palm as it is in your pocket. Present the Bluboo X2 to any of your friends and they will be really shocked by it’s low price on the look and feel alone!

So it is all good and we should all buy one right? Well it is good, but not without its problems. As mentioned above 2GB RAM is missed sometimes, some won’t like the Oppo clone look and (as usual) GPS is weak, in fact it is the only really disapointing feature of the phone as a whole.

With that said, if you are in the market for an Octacore phone, and you have a budget of $150 then you will find the Bluboo X2 a very difficult device to beat! Thanks to Tinydeal for supplying the Bluboo X2 for review.
