Unboxing the MeeGo Pad T01 TV stick: The world’s smallest Windows PC!

The MeeGo Pad T01 stirred quite a revelation when we first heard about it back in November. And it’s natural; it’s a bloody tiny piece of kit that has the internals to replace an entry-level desktop… especially for people like the ones on the GizChina team. Writing and basic photo editing is what we do most on the computer (besides surfing the web, of course), which doesn’t always require 8GB and 16GB RAM systems.

The MeeGo Pad is a lightweight (both, in the literal and virtual sense) device that looks a lot like your USB thumb drive. It runs full Windows 8.1 right out of the box something that a lot of Android PC connoisseurs have been asking for since as long as memory can remember.

Gizchina News of the week

At the moment, it costs as much as entry-level Windows 8.1 powered tablets, but that’s how the market works. The price will soon go down, and the product will be made available for a lesser price. That being said, the $110 asking price it has right now is by no means an unfair premium to pay.

We received the device today, and played with it for a while… set it up, browsed the web (and installed Chrome, haha), etc. The initial impressions are extremely positive. I’ll be using it as my main PC just to see how it all works, and then post a full review here at GizChina in the coming weeks.

I would be interrested to know, whether it is possible to power it from a usb port on the tv, general benchmark scores, usability with a lot of open tabs in chrome with some text editor, usability as a streaming stick, reliability of the wifi, connecting it to a webcam for some big screen skyping, audio and video playback (fullhd), heat and if it is capable of running all the time without shutting off (maybe even if it was possible to put a linux OS in it… 😀 )

      I second the motion.

Haven’t gotten much time to use it too much thanks to college, but from what I can tell already WiFi reception is pretty good. It’s better than my existing lightweight PC (ASUS Chromebox). It does seem to heat up a little more than I would’ve liked, so I personally wouldn’t keep it running all the time. If you want to have something like that, I guess you’re better off buying a slightly larger TV box (so that there’s enough space for air to pass) with Linux support. About the other questions, please expect answers by the weekend.

      Cheers

I would love to give it a try but I can’t live with a single monitor setup, this isn’t 1999 anymore.

I’ve recently bought a couple of these mini PCs. They are absolutely brilliant devices but I’ve noticed they do get really hot after a short time (around 70degC).

Did anyone else have the same problem?

    • January 14, 2015

Yeah, it does heat up. However I found that with non-hardware intensive usage (browsing, etc.) the device doesn’t get too hot.

Hi Yash. Can you please look into whether this can play 1080p high bitrate movies in xbmc. Would be good as a media centre.

    • January 14, 2015

Hi Damien. Will check for that (hopefully I don’t forget). Expect the review very soon!
