Last year Gionee held the title for the world’s thinnest phone with the Gionee S5.1 longer than any other company, and at MWC they hope to take the title back.
There has been a thin smartphone war raging on in China between Gionee, Oppo, Vivo and most recently IVVI (a sub brand of Coolpad). Oppo kicked the trend off with the Oppo Finder, then Vivo took over, and since then manufacturers have battled it out.
Currently Vivo have the thinnest phone on the market with the Vivo X5 Max, however IVVI will have announced a thinner 4.7mm phone which will go on sale very soon. In third place it is the Oppo R5, and 4th the Gionee S5.1, and Gionee are hot to take the title back.
Gizchina News of the week
In a press release today, Gionee state that they will launch a new ultra thin phone at MWC in Barcelona this year. The press release comments that smartphone makers have compromised design to make thin phones over the past year and specifically mentions missing headphone jacks and protruding camera as design faults with certain thin phones (Oppo R5).
The question is if Gionee do have a phone thinner than 4.7mm what size will the battery be and what type of hardware can we look forward to seeing?

no removable battery, 4.5mm, no expandable storage…
thinnest phone means it’s going to be non-removable.
Thin phones are just stuped advertising for me
It sounds like they are running a little thin, but let’s see aye.
