Which of these 64bit MT6752 smartphones is better to buy? The Meizu m1 note or the latest Ecoo E04 Aurora?
There has simply been no better time than 2015 to be a fan of Chinese smartphone. The current generation of 64bit Chinese phones are better than ever, thanks to Mediatek’s strong processor line-up and Chinese manufacturers years of building the best specs at the lowest prices.
The only issue with Chinese phones now is which one should you part money with to own?
Below we take a good close look at the latest Ecoo E04 Aurora Android smartphone vs the Meizu m1 note. With the same processor, the same size screen and similar hardware which phone is better to choose?
Meizu m1 note vs Ecoo E04: Specifications
[table id=200 /]Meizu m1 note vs Ecoo E04: Design
Both the Ecoo E04 and the Meizu m1 not feature a 5.5-inch display, but the Ecoo manages to be slightly longer than the Meizu, but retain a similar width. In the hand this means both phones feel similar, and due to the screen length it’s not easy to reach the very top of either unless you have large hands.
Meizu uses a magnesium chassis inside the polycarbonate shell of the m1 note. The result is a lightweight chassis that feels comfortable and solid in the hand.
Ecoo have gone for an alloy chassis on the E04 Aurora, which is visible around the edges of the phone. This is especially notable in the base where the dual speakers are located, as opposed to the Meizu’s single speaker.
Physical controls are located on the left edge of the Ecoo E04 with the micro USB and 3.5mm headphone jack at the very top. The m1 note has a sIM tray on the left where dual SIMs can be inserted.
To get at the dual SIM slots and the micro SD card locations on the Ecoo, the Aurora has a more traditional removable rear shell. Removing the rear also let’s you access the removable 3000mAh battery.
Gizchina News of the week
Looking at the Ecoo and Meizu m1 note from the front we can see the Ecoo device has capacitive chin buttons rather than Flyme’s smartbar. The main home button is different too. Not only is it a physical home button but it houses a fingerprint scanner more similar to the Meizu MX4 Pro.
Another notable feature of the Ecoo E04 is the 2.5D display. What this means is the display is thinner at the edges giving a nice smooth transition from the edge of the screen to the center. This type of screen is also found on the Xiaomi Mi Note and also the IUNI U3.
Meizu m1 note vs Ecoo E04: Performance
On paper the Meizu m1 note and Ecoo E04 should have very similar performance. Both phone uses the same 64bit MT6752 octacore processor, 2GB RAM and a 5.5-inch FHD display.
We’ll wait for the full review of each model before running all the benchmarks, but from Antutu and Quadrant score we can see that the Ecoo does have a very slight benchmark advantage over the Meizu m1 note.
Both phones are suitable for an Android 5.0 Lollipop update which will make better use of the 64bit architecture of the MT6752 octacore chpset so expect benchmarks to greatly improve in the coming months.
In actual use both phones handle everyday workloads from gaming to social network apps without issue.
Meizu m1 note vs Ecoo E04: Camera
When it comes to the rear camera’s both phones look similar on paper, but in tests the Ecoo E04 actually offers brighter colours.
Below are sample images taken with the Ecoo E04 Aurora and Meizu m1 note. Both phones can take great photos in bright daylight, but it really comes down to personal preference to which you like the most.
Personally I prefer the more saturated photos captured with the Ecoo’s 13 mega-pixel camera.

Meizu m1 note vs Ecoo E04: Conclusion
The Ecoo E04 Aurora and Meizu m1 note offer similar features and offer very similar performance. At the time of writing only the Ecoo E04 is available for international purchase with support for FDD-LTE and WCDMA networks, the m1 note is only on sale in China with TD support.
Where the Ecoo beats the Meizu is with the finger print security, removable battery and slightly higher performance. The Ecoo E04 also has a low international price tag of around $189.99. The Meizu m1 note international price hasn’t been revealed but looking at the higher asking price of the MX4 and MX4 Pro, $250 isn’t out of the realm of possibility.
Looking at the two phones together which would you opt for given the chance?
But the ECOO E04 doesnt have a 16mpx sensor?
Probably not. Possibly 13mp Sony Exmor RS.
Recent information suggest it is an OV13850 sensor, but nothing about lens maker…
If so that would be good to know, I was beginning to suspect it was actually an 8mp as for me that is where it currently performs best. Even at 13mp it displays a touch too much noise and a slightly mottled look up close. Mine also has a habit of miss focusing, you can see it go past perfect focus and stop just beyond. A few reviews have commented on soft or blurred images, so hopefully this is a software thing and can be fixed. I’m using Camera FV-5 app which has spot focusing which helps somewhat.
I’m considering this phone as a replacement of my htc One, which in camera terms is superb, but I’d like something “big”.
What abut low-light environtments?Does ECOO produce decent results? And at video recording, is it good?
Thanks.
I will have to test it. If it is an OV13850 it’s promoted as being designed for good low-light shooting, but based on the noise I see in daylight shots I feel night shots will not be so good. Perhaps Ecoo’s desire to bump the MP rate has spoilt it slightly.
These are some daylight shots (not bright sunshine though), resized to get below 2mb site limit.
two

Not bad, but not Iuni U2 / Gionee Elife 7 level.
That noise remebers me some Xperia models. If even in not bad conditions noise is clearly present, I’m scared of what night shots could be… As a reference, this is night shot with my htc One M7, night-mode and hand held.
Indeed the mottled look and noise on the Ecoo also reminded me of Sony HX cameras, but if it’s actually an OV unit we can’t blame Sony this time. I think the interpolation is largely to blame and a big mistake by Ecoo. I’ll take some night shots shortly and upload here tonight.
Well, ECOO night mode isn’t bad at all. Good equilibrium between low light outside and high inside. Iuni is overexposed inside although outside get a large amount of detail.
Thanks!
Hi Steve can you elaborate on the FRONT camera and the NOTIFICATION LED ???? thanks!!!
Ecoo camera night mode
Ecoo auto mode
As a contrast here’s an Iuni U2 shot in auto mode (also a 16mp f2.2 camera)
Thanx for this one. Looking good.
These photo’s are actually pretty good if you know the quality is decreased a bit to fit the 2MB. Of course, it can always be better but considering the price of the phone I really like the photo’s,
Ugliest (E) vs Prettiest (M) …fight!!!
I actually really like the Ecoo design compared to Meizu’s design.
Yeah, me too. The E04 look more ‘phone’ to me. Meizu always has a very unique design which I also like but when I compare them, I like E04 better 🙂
In the official ECOO site they say it’s a 16 MP camera and I bet it is achieved trough interpolation (although I hope I’m wrong)
Too good to be true.
How can we test this? I’ve read on every site that it’s a true 16MP, not interpolated
whats the problem with china phones that wont come in 850mhz 3g in their majority 🙁
El problema es que esa no es la única frecuencia que existe en todo el mundo.
i’d like to ask the Guest writing this about the Ecoo’s camera !
isnt it 16 mp ? why do u mention it as 13 mp? are Ecoo lying like Ulefone ?
Please clarify!
As far as I know it is a 13 mega-pixel sensor with interpolation to 16 mega-pixel
Do know what sensor in particular (IMX214?), I don’t understand why they interpolate it, 13MP is pretty good.
Reviews have shown it is 13mp interpolated to 16mp (though you can still set to native 13mp, 16mp is an option). Mystery is what sensor, I have seen no published info on this, Ecoo remain silent even to direct requests on Facebook. I presume it is the same 13/16mp that will also appear in the Elephone P7000. Could Elephone have developed there own?
Ummm I really doubt it because manufacturing your own sensor is not that easy, what about the 13mp samsung sensor used in the m1 note? I honestly have no clue.
Devicespecification.com now list the P7000 as having a 16mp(?) Sony Exmor RS, no model number given (IMX 135 ?). So hopefully it is a Sony unit in the Ecoo. Samples I have seen look pretty good, just a bit noisy as presumably they were shot at 16mp rather than 13mp.
Well, talking about a 16mp sony sensor the only thing I can think of is the IMX240, and I bet it’s not that one. I would prefer the 16mp OV16825 sensor rather than interpolated garbage. If it’s a Sony one I still don’t understand why they interpolate an “already-good” sensor, interpolation makes me feel reluctant to a brand.
Sure the OV would have been amazing and the f2.2 seemed to suggest that, but it now looks very unlikely, samples don’t compare to those from the Iuni U2 and Gionee E7. My bet is IMX135 f2.2 interpolated to 16mp, which should be fine if used at native 13mp.
my question : DOES interpolating a 13 mp sensor to 16mp , ACTUALLY worsens camera output and performance?
Image interpolation creates new data/pixels using an
approximation of color and intensity based on the values of
surrounding pixels. It’s a best guess, so never perfect and can lead to blurring, lack of definition and increased noise. They might be trying to hide this with the increased saturation. To my eyes the Meizu looks sharper in the above samples.
I would always shoot at the native resolution (where available) and would prefer review samples to do so for a best judgement of capabilities.
Another worry though is that the Bluboo X6 is virtually the same phone as the Ecoo Aurora and that has an 8mp camera..
Well, that doesn’t sound good. IMX135 would be good enough considering it’s the sensor in the LG G3.
I think it does have the OV13850. Look at me post above written to Ricardo.
Yes it does have the OV13850, as (as I see you’ve also found) is shown by the ROM update, which should be good, but it is a 13mp sensor, not the OV4688 16mp sensor used in Iuni U2 and Gionee E7 (Plus they have the Largon M8 Lens). Unfortunately my Ecoo has a (back)focus fault so it might be going back.
I was really afraid mine would also have that but I made many photo’s last couple of days and nothing weird with the focus occurred. I hope it can be solved for you.
Do you perhaps know anything about a Lollipop update? Some webshops says it will arrive in a couple of weeks but I dunno
A video reviewer complained of soft focus also, so possibly an initial batch problem or poor QC. I need to make and upload a video demo’ing the problem before they will accept a return, which is a pain.
Not heard anything concrete on Lolipop, I’d normaly hold fire on an update such as that till positive word comes through, but with my issue on the Ecoo I’d probably jump straight in if it came up shortly in case that offered a fix.
OK, thanx. And good luck!
+1
I’ve read that on ROM update info on the Frandroid website they mention that the camera is a 13.2MP OV13850. Too bad the website is in French so I can’t navigate to the text.
Edit: used Google Chrome to auto-translate website and I found that they referred to needrom.com for official ROM changelog entries. (see above this post)
Look at these camera-related changelog entries from official ROM:

Though the lesser twin.
thats just sad! you should spread the word on all gizchina networks , about YET another lie from a chinese phone maker on flagship specs!
THIS IS SIMPLY OUTRAGEOUS AND UTTERLY DISGUSTING!
And the battery life section????
Ecoo E04 has a 3000Mah battery. It lasts me through the day with very intensive use but does need to charge in the evening (21:00 or so) but many phones do so I just deal with it .
The 3000 mAh battery in the ecoo phone is definitely a fake capacity, it disappeared in front of my eyes, many users stated, it more likely can be just about 2150 mAh. It is very light and tiny, battery in my Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is only 2850, but it works like hell on QHD display and is much heavier.
The ECOO for me, I like the colours in its pics better, the stereo speakers and lower price tag! I think Miezu have priced all there phones too high internationally.
Ecoo has NOT stereo speakers, one of them is faked one, just a hole, only a design thing. I had it for a month and sent back to the seller, as it was all wrong.
Yeah, it’s not a 3000mAh has been measured and it has at max 2300 mAh… again lies
if only i could know how is the GPS on both devices
is it getting a fix lock in less then 5 seconds like my jiayu f2- sometimes less?
is it going weird while driving and lose lock- like all the old chinese smartphones?
GPS on the E04 takes me about 8 seconds, something when I already drive it’s 10 or 12. But all good for me 🙂 GPS on Meizu is probably also good but I have no experience with it.
More importantly the Ecoo is blue not black.
True. It looks pretty black most of the time though. Only in real strong light it’s clealy blue, otherwise you won’t notice much of it.
Actually Meizu is already selling the WCDMA version
Your information it’s no true; you say than similar width Meizu=75 Ecco +77 !!!!

Is there any chance Andy or someone else could compare the Ecoo to the Ulefone Be Pro. I think they would be a much closer comparison and I’m really on the fence between those two. I’m in Canada and really need the functionality of the LTE especially 2100 and 2600mhz.
Any input from someone that’s been hands on with both would be greatly appreciated
lol you got to be mad to think the ecoo looks better, its fugly! Meizu m1 note is super clean. Would trust meizu build quality more too, plus will probably get lollipop.
You know, I’d like it if others could respect an opinion, especially when said opinion is very valid.
I’m with you airyl, ecoo looks better! And if he annoys you too much I hope you will get you shot gun to go “sarah connor” him badly

Greetings from UK. Go and get your Ecoo, I’ve ordered the Meizhu and will receive it on this Friday. You said it worked in China only? Check: http://www.pandawill.com/meizu-m1-note-64bit-octa-core-fdd-lte-55-inch-gorilla-glass-fhd-2gb-16gb-3140mah-p98546.html
Video of the Ecoo on youtube shows both light bleeding and a strong orange tint. I even emailed them asking about the camera sensor :/
I’ve seen that too. I have a E04 but I do not have that problem. I cannot find any light bleeding and/or orange tint. Maybe it was a pre-production version?

Meizu design is very clean, albeit not very original. Ecoo design is… well, let’s just say the designer must have been drunk ;). If i had to choose, I’d choose clean but unoriginal over fugly any day and all day. The Meizu is also smaller and a lot lighter. Also, being a former owner of Nokia N9 I happen to like the unibody polycarbonate body (warm to the touch unlike cold metal, more immune to scratches than metal, and once dented looks better than dented metal). The one advantage the Ecoo has — removable battery — is not an advantage for me at all because I never spend more $$ to buy an extra battery (I have a 12000 mAh power pack for long trips). And by the time the battery inside the Meizu starts to degrade I will have moved on to another phone already, so yeah, having a removable battery is a moot point for me.
I agree that a removable battery it handy but that a real deal breaker. In the design-section I do like the E04 more but that is personal.

three question:
1) Why ECOO suport only 32GB mSD card (as 64b processor)?
2) Quality of GPS?
3) Ecoo model does’n have compas or gyroscop?
1) Doesn’t depend on the CPU, but on the phones ability for other filesystems (exFAT,NTFS). Most SDHC-phones works with SDXC-cards formatted in FAT32.
2) Multi-GNSS-Receiver (GPS, Glonass, Beidou)
1) I dunno. It has 16GB ROM and I just put in 16GB of external memory. 32GB is too much for me so it’s okay.
2) I use the Ecoo E04 for navigation every day: it works flawless
3) It must have it; I use the phone as a steering wheel in racing games. How else does it notice my directions? It must be a gyroscop right? Compass I do not know.
