After the surprising announcement made โ€‹โ€‹by the Microsoft that they were working with Xiaomi to release a downloadable Windows Phone ROM for the Mi4, some selected members of the press had the opportunity to test the new Windows ROM on the device itself.

According to some of the testers online, the ROM looked great and worked quite well considering it was a technical preview. Oddly, they also found the overall ROM slightly confusing to use, although this may be because if their unfamiliarity with Windows Phone.

Some testers also felt that the ROM helped the Mi4 feel unique, and that it allowed the Mi4 become less similar to the iPhone.

We’re still waiting for more news about the downloadable Windows Phone. Hugo Barra has clarified that Windows Phone will not be able to dual-boot with Android and that Windows Phone will be installed in a similar fashion to any custom ROM.

Why would you want to? One of the best things about Xiaomi is MIUI.

Looks like a certain arm twisting by Microsoft.

Oh im sure M$oft paid big bucks for this to happen. No one would want to use their OS otherwise.

ALL Mi3/Mi4 are like nexus devices (for developers) with unlocked boot loader and any1 can easy Fastboot anything on device. Snapdragon 800/801 is well documented SoC. I think M$ didn’t ask Xiaomi about this, they just upload their ROM and hope that some1 will do the same. Personally I use M$ desktop and currently do not want M$ phone. If M$ would allow uploading android ROM on Nokia/M$ devices half of them would run android already ๐Ÿ™‚

I have used it before, it’s not a horrible OS it has a lot of useful features but the lack of apps completely kills it.

it has close to half a million apps, has had a ton of updates and windows 10 for phones will allow devs to easily make android and ios apps win phone compatible…

Half a million apps really isn’t that much especially when you consider the massive amount of fake apps (which happens on every platform). Windows is still missing some of the most basic apps that people use everyday. This isn’t me talking bad about M$oft (I own and love an Xbox One), it is a simple fact that the app selection is no where close to what Droid/OS offers. I tried to use a Windows phone for a month and it was just aggravating that I couldn’t do simple things like open an app to check my bank account. Maybe Windows 10 will be different, but we have to wait to see.

Having choices is always better. I’m actually a little shocked, I would’ve thought Hugo Barra would’ve been against something like this.
