Quite a lot of Chinese OEMs are currently struggling with Lollipop updates. Its not that they haven’t released the OTAs, however; it is more a case of the update going wrong.
It was believed that the JiaYu S3 would skip this update. The current JiaYu flagship (which might soon be replaced by the JiaYu S4) will, however, get Lollipop, something which JiaYu Germany confirmed earlier today.
The S3 is a very well put together smartphone that doesn’t sell for a lot of money, something that naturally makes the device very popular. You can read our review of the JiaYu S3 here. The MT6752 processor, 2/3GB RAM and decent optics still make the S3 a favourite among Chinese tech fans.

The phone also carries the IMX214 from Sony. If you’ve been reading GizChina lately, you will have realized this is the same sensor unit that has been making a lot of fuss for OEMs in the past, including China’s own Elephone.
Coming back to the JiaYu S3, the Lollipop update should make the device even snappier, and the added features that come along with Lollipop will be a welcome addition!

That’s great, but how about they release KITKAT for the Jiayu S1 which i bought or 299$ a year ago? I really like Jiayu devices, best build quality for the price, but they seriously have to step up their software game.
so it wasnt supposed to get Lolipop earlier ???
i mean , its 64 bit after all , and shouldnt all 64 bits be entitled to Android 5.0 ??
If only Google was more actively pushing lollipop adoption!
Google can not do anything about it. They released the sources and everybody could release their ROM the next day. But the manufacturers focus on new models and only update their old ones when their SW engineers have a free day or two to do it.
Since Android is opensource, everyone can do with the system anything they want. Google can not push anyone to use an updated version. Even Microsoft can not stop anyone from selling a computer with Windows 95 if they decide so and get the needed drivers.
There could also be unofficial ROMs but because drivers for new Linux versions and source code for the old ones are not available, the devlopers can not build them. Blame again the manufacturers and HW suppliers (MediaTek in the first place).
Don’t think being Opensource is reason to deliberately hold back Ecosystem!
Microsoft never made desktop PC’s for OS & don’t control 3rd party software distribution like Googles Playstore.
Had it been left to MS & Intel Same thing could’ve happened to Windows OS before adapting it to AMD’s x64, which was delayed years after hardware got released!
You say Android is Opensource whilst MTK’s is not! Is that not fault of Google.
Mediatek don’t manufacture phones only SOC’s to phone Manufacturers & has to operate within Open Handset Alliance which they themselve are party to.

Of course it is not just MTK. But MTK is known for providing their closed source drivers very late. But even if the drivers are available, many manufacturers simply decide that they will not release an upgraded version.
In this situation the community could help and build the ROM by themselves. But if they don’t have access to the drivers, they can not build it.
What Google is trying to do is increasing the amount of libraries and services they can update through Google Play services.

I´ve got an S3 owner.
It´s a very good phone, Outstading screen, fast camera and blistering fast almost all time.
Almost, because i´ve found some lag entering applications and the Android own version of the blue screen of the death, the “this app has stopped working…”
I hope with lollipop the problem will be fixed,
