Like Ulefone, Elephone, UMi and some other Chinese brands, Doogee too has found inspiration and is making a lot of phones all of a sudden. The mid-range market is the market to bet on for Chinese brands this year, and Doogee does that with a few phones including the new Y100 Pro.
The Y100 Pro isnāt as mid-range as some other phones, lacking a fingerprint sensor and a large display. But youāll know by now that there is a certain dearth of decent phones with sub 5.5-inch screens, and the Y100 Pro tries to fill the gap.
Itās another one of the MT6735(P)/2GB RAM phones. Is it any good?

Doogee Y100 Pro Review: Design and Build
Before getting my hands on the Y100 Pro, I expected the phone to be very compact, which wasnāt to be. The device is wider than it appears in renders, but thanks to the 5-inch display, the phone is still very usable in one hand. It is perhaps the design and the fact that the phone doesnāt have the largest display that make the Y100 Pro the Chinese equivalent of the Motorola Moto G.
Thanks to a very āenvelopingā rear casing, the Y100 Pro has the double-edge effect we first saw on the OnePlus One. Not as pronounced, but itās there.
The front of the Y100 Pro is covered in 2.5D curved glass, which is something you can safely call a standard for any Chinese phone that sells for over US$100-110 now. You have to admit, the phone does look more expensive than just US$120.
The curved glass has a reassuring metal lip around it, which should come in handy if youāre prone to drops and such. The metal lip is indeed very easy to miss, especially with the curved glass on the sides. Nice touch!
The screen itself isnāt quite dark to make the phone look like a clean black slab when itās off, a phenomenon observed on a lot of other devices.
Right below the screen, the Doogee Y100 Pro has the set of 3 capacitive buttons including (L-R) menu (WHY! There should be a recent apps button instead), home and back.
The rest of the phone is pretty smooth and simple, with a curved back and volume/power buttons on the right edge.
Design is of course subjective, but the Y100 Pro has a very subtle one which I donāt think will get a lot of contrasting views. Iād give the simple and sleek design an 8/10.
Moving on to the build. It was earlier believed that the Y100 Pro would feature a metal rear cover akin to the HTC M8, which isnāt the case as we know. The build is, however, still very reassuring. The device isnāt unnecessarily heavy like the Oukitel U8, and isnāt lighter than youād want it to be.
I havenāt yet managed to drop the phone, but I have a feeling the Y100 Pro will take drops well. Unless you drop the phone face-down (screen-down, rather), it should be virtually impossible to crack the screen because thereās no way the glass would be taking the impact otherwise — the edges of the screen are about 1.5mm off from the edges of the body of the phone.
Doogee Y100 Pro Review: Hardware and Performance
The MT6735P doesnāt sound like the most powerful mid-range processor, and it surely isnāt. Performance is, in general, at par with the Oukitel U8 (review) with virtually nothing to choose from.
When MediaTek first introduced its 64-bit chipsets, phones like the Elephone P6000 impressed big time with SoCs such as the MT6732 and later, the MT6752. The P6000 has since moved on to the MT6753, and so have other MT6752 phones which really make you wonder about what MediaTek is up to. The MT6732 is certainly more potent than the MT6735P, which is ironic because phones with the latter cost just as much as the ones with the former.
In short, if I were to pick one between the MT6732 and the MT6735P, it would, without doubt, be the MT6732.
The MT6735P is very similar to the Snapdragon 400 in performance in my opinion. It just doesnāt heat up that much. The MT6732, on the other hand, was akin to the Snapdragon 600 (maybe even beyond?) in certain aspects.
2GB RAM helps the case, but one thingās for certain; the Y100 Pro, like every other MT6735P phone that has released and will be released, isnāt made to handle games very well.

Moving on to the hardware part. The 5-inch 720p display isnāt the most breathtaking youāll come across, but is certainly fit to do its job. Thereās no backlight bleeding/bright spots/dead pixels whatsoever, which is testament to the good quality checks that Doogee seem to have implemented (which donāt seem to apply to some other aspects of the phone).
Viewing angles are OK-ish. The screen will look extra bright at some angles, which isnāt a very uncommon occurrence
Moving on to the audio, youāll be disappointed to know that this aspect of the phone isnāt as praiseworthy as the others. The speaker output lacks bass, and thereās ugly distortion at 100% volume.
Doogee Y100 Pro Review: Camera
Having used some other phones such as the Elife S7, LeTV Le 1 in the recent past, my expectations of a smartphone camera have naturally gone up. However, it took me a while to come to terms with the fact that the Y100 Pro is an altogether different ball game. For a US$120 phone, the Y100 Pro takes OK-ish photos. As usual, HDR helps but at the cost of unnecessary dramatization at times.
If I were asked to pick a strictly budget phone with the best camera, it would be the Redmi 1S. Which is a pity because the phone came out a year and a half back, and entry-level to mid-range phones still seem to be stuck at the same level.
Take a look at some shots taken on the Y100 Pro. Notice how it lacks proper dynamic balance.
Doogee Y100 Pro Review: Battery
First off, letās talk about the battery brick itself. The phone is listed to have a 2200mAh cell, which is confirmed by whatās printed on the battery shell. However, only a supremely thin sticker apart lies the truth — about the battery actually being just 1800mAh.
Doogee are clearly sourcing the 1800mAh battery from an OEM and slapping on a sticker with a rating that clearly doesnāt agree with the facts.
Chinese makers need to learn either one of these: either (i) mention the real capacity, or (ii) if they are going to lie, do it well.
You know which option you’dĀ prefer.
Coming to the battery life of the phone, it is pretty mediocre with around 4 hours of screen on time in general if used through one day. With a 5-inch screen youād generally expect the battery life to be around 5 hours SoT or more. The Oukitel U8 which comes with the same SoC does a lot better in this regard.
Doogee Y100 Pro Review: Other
Worth mentioning is the fact that the Y100 Pro features a pretty good set of antennae for reception. This includes WiFi, cell as well as GPS. (GPS is in fact brilliant).
The Android 5.1 installation on the Y100 Pro is near-stock. This is something weāre starting to see on more and more phones, especially on devices which are meant to be exported out of China. Iāve already had an OTA update, and if Doogee can continue doing that, itād be great.
Having spoken about poor audio, I must also mention that isnāt just restricted to music and other media output, but unfortunately phone calls as well. Almost every person I talked to on the device complained about poor audio on their end (which means the mic isnāt great either). Also, there doesnāt appear to be a secondary mic for noise cancellation.
Unlike what you’d expected from the standard MediaTek MT6735, the MT6735P on the Doogee Y100 Pro means that the phone runs a 32-bit system and not a 64-bit one.
Doogee Y100 Pro Review: Conclusion
The battery lie kept aside, the Doogee Y100 Pro is a decent phone. The audio does suck, but the device has an OK cameraā¦ and is 5-inch which according to me is the USP of this phone, along with the good build. There are quite a few aspects where the phone could get better, however. This includes the aforementioned audio output and battery life.
At US$120, the phone will have a hard to competing against devices powered by MT6753 which will soon fall to this price. US$100 is something Iād pay for a phone like this; for the US$120 that the Y100 Pro costs, the Elephone P600 looks like way better option.
I donāt know what the MT6735P costs (mustnāt be much), but manufacturers should really consider investing in the MT6752/3.

I prefer they go with (I), otherwise they’ll need another person on the assembly line who’s sole job will be to erase the OEM real capacity rating before sticking that “Original Battery” sticker on.
For $99USD, you can get a Moto E LTE (2015) on Amazon.
While the display is smaller and has lower resolution, the Moto E beats these cheap China phones in every aspect.
For around $130 you can get a Xiaomi Redmi 2 or Lenovo S8 which are both better options than the Moto E.
Never heard of the ‘S8…both versions listed on http://www.kimovil.com/ are considerably more expensive.
The RedMi 2 costs $30 USD more than the Moto E. Both the LTE and GSM versions of the Moto E can be ordered with next day free shipping through Amazon Prime. That sure beats waiting a month for a China phone. No doubt the RedMi 2 is a nice phone, but unfortunately is doesn’t support the right LTE bands for the US & Canada. Also , virtually no Xiaomi service centers in N.America. I use the RedMi Note 4G when I’m over in Europe for business but dread the day it will need repair. Perhaps you have better support for Xiaomi in Bangkok?

This site is made up of more than just people in the US. In Thailand Xiaomi just entered the market and only sells the Mi4. But I have used several Xiaomi phones over the years and only had one problem that I ever required a service center. I sent it to Xiaomi Singapore, had to pay for the parts and got the phone back in 3 days. I have also never had to wait a month for a phone from China. Using DHL you can get phones in as little as 3 days. Using regular postal mail the longest I have ever waited was 2 weeks. For me LTE isn’t as big of a deal as having a great phone, 3G is more than fast enough for what I need to do.

If my budget was $300 neither of those phones would even be considered. Actually even if my budget was around $200 those wouldn’t be on my list. The P7000 is great on paper but horrible in execution, I like the Be Touch 2 but for the money there are better phones available. What do you need/want in a phone is a better question?

Honestly I would look at all of the flagships of last year. You can find them all for under $300 and they are still more than fast enough, all of them have excellent cameras and batteries and will handle everything you throw at it. They are much better in terms of performance and quality than phones like Elephone. I would look at the following:

Meizu MX4
One Plus One
Oppo Find 7a
ZTE Nubia Z7

I dont have much personal experience with the Be Touch 2, but the few people I know that do have said it is mostly good. Although they did have some issues with the software and the fingerprint scanner. I would read as many reviews as possible on it before deciding on it. It’s still kind of new though so there aren’t that many reviews.
If your budget is around $300 I would honestly save just a little bit more and get the Meizu MX5. Gearbest has it for $329. I have been using it for the past few days and it is an excellent phone. I haven’t had a single issue yet. Other phones with fingerprint are the THL 2015 and Mlais M7. I used the 2015 and if you like the design and it has your bands it is a great phone.

In terms of benchmarks the MX4 is actually the fastest but in terms of actual day to day usage you won’t notice a difference with any of them. They are all incredibly fast.

Speed wise their isn’t much separating them. Either one will offer a seamless experience. I know your looking for a definitve answer but there really isnt one. On paper (using benchmarks) we could come up with a “winner” but benchmarks tell little about actual usage.
The major difference between the Helios X10 (MX5) and Exynos 5430 (Pro) is the X10 is a 64 bit chip, which means it can theoretically take advantage of a lot of what Android 5.0 offers. Right now 5.0 is still a work in progress and much of those features offer no clear advantage. But once all the bugs are worked out (I would say it needs another year at least) 64 bit will be a clear advantage. Any of the flagship SoC’s of the past year though are more than fast enough to handle 99% of what Android offers. What matters more is the software each one runs. Bad software can cripple the best SoC’s.

I currently own the MX5, I won it on the contest here. But if I didn’t own one and I was going to buy one, I would still choose the 5 for a few reasons:
1. Helios X10 – it is a 64 bit SoC so it is future proof.
2. Display – It has a 1080p AMOLED from Samsung, the Pro has a 2k display. 2k looks good but is uses a lot of battery.
3. Design – the 5 is made of all metal and is both lighter and thinner.
4. Camera – they all use the same sensor but with the 5 they updated the optics (lens) and added laser focus (which allows the camera to focus in mere milliseconds).
5. Fast Charge – The MX5 supports fast charge. From my limited testing it takes about 10 minutes to reach 25% and about 45 minutes to reach 80%.

My wife has it and to me it’s not worth the extra money. The camera doesnt look any better than the MX5, in fact I think the S6 is worse in low light shots. The battery is horrible on the S6 due to the fact that they have a 2k display with a 2550mAh battery (the Mx5 has 1080 with 3050mAh). A lot of the parts used in the MX5 are actually made by Samsung. Meizu and Samsung have a long standing relationship dating back to the first Meizu phone in 2007.

MX5 is better in nearly everything but RAW CPU and GPU.
RAM management and Samsung doesn’t belong in the same sentence.
Free RAM is wasted RAM, your phone won’t load things slower because it has less free RAM, more RAM used means that you can change from one app to another in a second because both apps are already loaded into the RAM.

In my opinion yes it is better, others will disagree because the S6 costs more and comes from Samsung. So many assume its a better phone.
I have never really checked the Ram because both have 3GB which is more than enough for Android. Neither phone ever slows down and loads and switches apps instantly. Ram isn’t a problem with either.

I have seen that and I haven’t had any issues with it. My display looks 100X better than what he has in that video. I doubt its accuracy actually because I have several friends who also have the MX5 and they all say the same thing, the screen is amazing.

I think any SoC that was released in the last year is powerful enough for everything the play store has to offer. My old phone was a Mi4 and this is slightly faster but not a noticeable difference.

Any phone released in the last year will easily last you 2-3 years without issues. If you plan on using it for a few years what you should be looking at is RAM not so much speed. All modern processors in flagship phones have more power than most people will ever use.

I can only go buy what i am currently looking at, and my MX5 has an incredible display. One of the best I have ever used. You have to do what you think is best but for me I love this display.

My phone shows colors correctly and several tech bloggers who I am friends with and are currently writing reviews of the MX5 also had no issues with their displays. As for the image I can’t really say one way or the other, his phone could have been defective it happens to ever brand a certain number of units dont work right.

Read my previous response to this question. It is the same SoC used in the LeTV One which every review says it has excellent power. You are very conflicted by this phone wait a few weeks for some reviews then decide. I know of at least 5 reviews presently being conducted on this phone, one of them on this site.

You need to stop worrying about “speed” you will not face “speed” problems with flagships, hell it’s hard to face slowdows with the current line of budget phones from MediaTek.
What you need to worry about the MX5 and MX4 Pro, is that they run a HEAVILY modified Android skin, that can drive you nuts or you can love it, just take this into account: Meizu has only 1 navigation button, not the normal 3 every android phone has, that alone is enough for several people to hate their Meizu phones if they didn’t do a little research about Flyme before buying a Meizu.
That said I would go with the MX5 since it kinds of address the no navigation buttons “issue”

If my budget was $300 neither of those phones would even be considered. Actually even if my budget was around $200 those wouldn’t be on my list. The P7000 is great on paper but horrible in execution, I like the Be Touch 2 but for the money there are better phones available. What do you need/want in a phone is a better question?

This site is made up of more than just people in the US. In Thailand Xiaomi just entered the market and only sells the Mi4. But I have used several Xiaomi phones over the years and only had one problem that I ever required a service center. I sent it to Xiaomi Singapore, had to pay for the parts and got the phone back in 3 days. I have also never had to wait a month for a phone from China. Using DHL you can get phones in as little as 3 days. Using regular postal mail the longest I have ever waited was 2 weeks. For me LTE isn’t as big of a deal as having a great phone, 3G is more than fast enough for what I need to do.

Honestly I would look at all of the flagships of last year. You can find them all for under $300 and they are still more than fast enough, all of them have excellent cameras and batteries and will handle everything you throw at it. They are much better in terms of performance and quality than phones like Elephone. I would look at the following:
Xiaomi Mi4
Meizu MX4
One Plus One
Oppo Find 7a
ZTE Nubia Z7

I dont have much personal experience with the Be Touch 2, but the few people I know that do have said it is mostly good. Although they did have some issues with the software and the fingerprint scanner. I would read as many reviews as possible on it before deciding on it. It’s still kind of new though so there aren’t that many reviews.
If your budget is around $300 I would honestly save just a little bit more and get the Meizu MX5. Gearbest has it for $329. I have been using it for the past few days and it is an excellent phone. I haven’t had a single issue yet. Other phones with fingerprint are the THL 2015 and Mlais M7. I used the 2015 and if you like the design and it has your bands it is a great phone.

In terms of benchmarks the MX4 is actually the fastest but in terms of actual day to day usage you won’t notice a difference with any of them. They are all incredibly fast.

Speed wise their isn’t much separating them. Either one will offer a seamless experience. I know your looking for a definitve answer but there really isnt one. On paper (using benchmarks) we could come up with a “winner” but benchmarks tell little about actual usage.
The major difference between the Helios X10 (MX5) and Exynos 5430 (Pro) is the X10 is a 64 bit chip, which means it can theoretically take advantage of a lot of what Android 5.0 offers. Right now 5.0 is still a work in progress and much of those features offer no clear advantage. But once all the bugs are worked out (I would say it needs another year at least) 64 bit will be a clear advantage. Any of the flagship SoC’s of the past year though are more than fast enough to handle 99% of what Android offers. What matters more is the software each one runs. Bad software can cripple the best SoC’s.

I currently own the MX5, I won it on the contest here. But if I didn’t own one and I was going to buy one, I would still choose the 5 for a few reasons:
1. Helios X10 – it is a 64 bit SoC so it is future proof.
2. Display – It has a 1080p AMOLED from Samsung, the Pro has a 2k display. 2k looks good but is uses a lot of battery.
3. Design – the 5 is made of all metal and is both lighter and thinner.
4. Camera – they all use the same sensor but with the 5 they updated the optics (lens) and added laser focus (which allows the camera to focus in mere milliseconds).
5. Fast Charge – The MX5 supports fast charge. From my limited testing it takes about 10 minutes to reach 25% and about 45 minutes to reach 80%.
Xiaomi Mi4 goes for $230, and it’s better than those two be a long long shot, also the One Plus One goes for $300 if you really want a 5.5″ and the Meizu MX4 also goes for $300.

You need to stop worrying about “speed” you will not face “speed” problems with flagships, hell it’s hard to face slowdows with the current line of budget phones from MediaTek.
What you need to worry about the MX5 and MX4 Pro, is that they run a HEAVILY modified Android skin, that can drive you nuts or you can love it, just take this into account: Meizu has only 1 navigation button, not the normal 3 every android phone has, that alone is enough for several people to hate their Meizu phones if they didn’t do a little research about Flyme before buying a Meizu.
That said I would go with the MX5 since it kinds of address the no navigation buttons “issue”

My wife has it and to me it’s not worth the extra money. The camera doesnt look any better than the MX5, in fact I think the S6 is worse in low light shots. The battery is horrible on the S6 due to the fact that they have a 2k display with a 2550mAh battery (the Mx5 has 1080 with 3050mAh). A lot of the parts used in the MX5 are actually made by Samsung. Meizu and Samsung have a long standing relationship dating back to the first Meizu phone in 2007.

MX5 is better in nearly everything but RAW CPU and GPU.
RAM management and Samsung doesn’t belong in the same sentence.
Free RAM is wasted RAM, your phone won’t load things slower because it has less free RAM, more RAM used means that you can change from one app to another in a second because both apps are already loaded into the RAM.

In my opinion yes it is better, others will disagree because the S6 costs more and comes from Samsung. So many assume its a better phone.
I have never really checked the Ram because both have 3GB which is more than enough for Android. Neither phone ever slows down and loads and switches apps instantly. Ram isn’t a problem with either.

I have seen that and I haven’t had any issues with it. My display looks 100X better than what he has in that video. I doubt its accuracy actually because I have several friends who also have the MX5 and they all say the same thing, the screen is amazing.

I think any SoC that was released in the last year is powerful enough for everything the play store has to offer. My old phone was a Mi4 and this is slightly faster but not a noticeable difference.

I can only go buy what i am currently looking at, and my MX5 has an incredible display. One of the best I have ever used. You have to do what you think is best but for me I love this display.
Any phone released in the last year will easily last you 2-3 years without issues. If you plan on using it for a few years what you should be looking at is RAM not so much speed. All modern processors in flagship phones have more power than most people will ever use.

My phone shows colors correctly and several tech bloggers who I am friends with and are currently writing reviews of the MX5 also had no issues with their displays. As for the image I can’t really say one way or the other, his phone could have been defective it happens to ever brand a certain number of units dont work right.

Read my previous response to this question. It is the same SoC used in the LeTV One which every review says it has excellent power. You are very conflicted by this phone wait a few weeks for some reviews then decide. I know of at least 5 reviews presently being conducted on this phone, one of them on this site.
