Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 specs revealed, could launch August 16th

xiaomi redmi note 2

It looks like August 16th is the date and Beijing is the place where we will see the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2, so what about the details? Keep reading for more.

A Xiaomi device has shown up at TENAA with details and a design that reminds us a whole lot of the Redmi Note, only slimmer with a better design and higher specs. Could this be the long anticipated Xiaomi Redmi Note 2?

The design reminds us of the Xiaomi Mi4i, with a similar speaker placement , but with a camera and LED flash in the same position as older Xiaomi devices.

The front of the phone has a 5.5-inch 1080 display with narrower than usual bezels for a Redmi model phone. Beneath the display are red icons for home, menu and back.

Gizchina News of the week

From the TENAA docs, we see a 2.0Ghz processor will run the new Redmi phablet, likely a Mediatek MT6795, 2GB RAM, 16GB memory, SD memory card expansion and a 3020mAh battery. Cameras are 5 mega-pixel front and 13 mega-pixel rear, while MIUI is based on Android Lollipop.

What is your opinion on the Redmi Note 2? It all looks ok to us, although a larger battery might be more appreciated.

    Mediatek Mt6759 or Mt6795?? Don’t think so.

      August 2, 2015

Unless it’s a brand new SoC it’s the 6795 (Helios X10) because right now there is no such thing as a 6759. Most likely just a typing error.

        6797 would be killer , right ?

        • balcobomber25
          August 2, 2015

It would but it wouldn’t make sense at this price point for Xiaomi to do that, especially if they are going to release a 2nd Mi Note. The 6795 is more than powerful enough for the Note 2. It is the SoC powering several flagships such as MX5 and M9+.

I don’t think that Xiaomi is going to use any mediatek soc.

The only 2.0 Ghz that Qualcomm makes is the 810, I cant see them using that. So it’s either something new from Qualcomm or something from MTK.

A 999 Yuan device with mt6795 and Xiaomi quality? Are you sure? I have to sell my be touch 2 then.

When it comes to Xiaomi you can never be sure about anything lol. They are one of the best at keeping their specs internal. 99% of the “leaks” that claim to be a Xiaomi are often not.

I honestly doubt the price of the note 2 will be 699 yuan if they are going to sell it at the same price as the previous one, especially if this phone has mt6795 chipset.

If Xiaomi goes back to Mediatek why not with a big bang like MT6755 alias Helio P10. It will come in 3. quarter of the year with 2GHz and Mali T860 with two cluster.

    • Technerd
      August 2, 2015

      That would be really nice

    • Guaire
      August 2, 2015

The MT6755 seems like will be ready at early Q4, but first phones which contained it, will be out 1 month later than that best case, more likely 2 months or more later. Much later if Mediatek can’t prepare it in time. The MT6795 would be ready at Dec. 14 according to their roadmap, but first handsets with it released much later like April.

So assuming an early Sept. release, the Redmi Note 2 can enjoy best performer in the class title through lets say 4 months.

  6. Guaire
    August 2, 2015

It revealed little more than 3 weeks ago.

Assuming 999 yuan price tag, it will be the most powerful device in the class with MT6795.

It still on the heavier side for a plastic bodied phone (159g) and thinner side (8mm) according to TENAA. Also arguably on the uglier side with especially that frontal design among its competitors IMO. Though I have to say TENAA pics usually looks worse than actual device.

    • balcobomber25
      August 2, 2015

In the end it is going to look like a typical Xiaomi device. Even as a Xiaomi fan I will admit most of their devices are very boring to look at (except the Mi4 imo). But their design language is one of the least creative.

        August 4, 2015

Have you tried the Mi Note?

        • balcobomber25
          August 4, 2015

Yes it is like a Mi4 with an even better camera in a bigger size. It’s a very good phone. The Pro on the other hand is one of the worst uses of the 810, MIUI itself runs warm with the 810 its unbearable.

          • Chong Wen Hao
            August 4, 2015

How is it like a Mi 4? The design is so different. The 3 best parts of the Mi Note are the camera, sound and display.

            • balcobomber25
              August 4, 2015

It’s like a Mi4 on the inside. They share almost the same exact components:

Processor – both use SD801 clocked at 2.5ghz
              RAM – both have 3GB
              ROM – both have 16/64
Display – both are 1080p (Mi4 is a little crisper due to smaller screen)
Camera – both use IMX 214 (Mi Note is a little better due to update optics/software)

            • Chong Wen Hao
              August 4, 2015

I was raising the point that the Mi Note design was also very good.

            • balcobomber25
              August 4, 2015

Actually not a fan of the design. I dont hate it but it doesn’t stand out to me. It’s typical Xiaomi, not bad, not great.

            • Chong Wen Hao
              August 4, 2015

Actually it is not typical. They have never used this design before.

            • balcobomber25
              August 4, 2015

, I realize its a brand new design but if you took all branding off of it and showed it to Xiaomi fans they would be able to guess its a Xiaomi phone. It just has that Xiaomi look to it, hard to describe in words but all their phones have it.

            • Chong Wen Hao
              August 4, 2015

Actually, to be honest, most people won’t be able to tell. Many will say is that it is an upside-down Samsung s6 edge.

            • balcobomber25
              August 4, 2015

The S6 Edge is even worse looking lol.

              August 4, 2015

Not talking about what looks nicer here. The design on the Mi Note is just so different from what they normally do so it is not a typical Xiaomi design.

            • balcobomber25
              August 4, 2015

It’s their normal design with a curved back lol. It’s really not that special. I get it you love it and think its amazing. I don’t and know amount of your comments is gonna make me change that. It’s just not the style I want in a phone.

            • Chong Wen Hao
              August 5, 2015

I never said that it is the best design. All I am trying to say is that you are wrong by saying that the Mi Note is typical Mi phones design. Can you name another Mi phone with this type of curve?

            • balcobomber25
              August 5, 2015

Ignore the curve and look at the whole phone.

            • Chong Wen Hao
              August 5, 2015

But I asked you what is the unique part about Xiaomi phones that allows to you recognise that it is designed by Xiaomi and you said the curve. Now you are asking me to ignore the curve.

            • Chong Wen Hao
              August 5, 2015

The frame is shaped differently. That is the unique part about the phone. Its shape. If you are talking about the front, I really can’t help you. There is not a lot you can change at the front except its shape, which is slightly changed on the Mi note. When we talk about design of the phone, we consider the overall design of the phone. 2/3 difference is a lot of difference. The other 1/3 is sort of fixed. You need a screen, front camera… There is not many ways you can change it that will benefit the design.

            • balcobomber25
              August 5, 2015

At the end of the day you love the phone, I do not. We have different opinions that is not a bad thing we just see things differently. It’s pointless to continue this rhetoric.

            • Chong Wen Hao
              August 5, 2015

Stop denying that it is not the typical Xiaomi design you mentioned. We were not talking about who likes it or not. We were talking about how different the design is.

            • balcobomber25
              August 6, 2015

Your so in love with it that your never going to see otherwise. It’s not worth the time to argue with someone like that. Look at the back of the Mi Note and the Mi4 side by side, forget about the curved glass you love so much. Look at them lying flat next to each other. Now turn them over and look at them from the front. There is very little besides your curve that truley differentiates them from one other. They both have that boring, white, drab, generic look to them. Like every other Xiaomi phone of this generation.

            • Chong Wen Hao
              August 6, 2015

You cannot assume that it will look the same at the back without the curve glass. After all, the curve glass is part of the design. Don’t forget that the frame is also shaped differently. If you are using the same logic, it is also possible to say Apple never changed their iphone design, which is not true because most people agree that the design changed every two year. Like I have said earlier, there is not a lot to change in front. And lastly, I never said anything about loving the phone.

            • balcobomber25
              August 6, 2015

Apple didn’t change the design until the Iphone 5. If you took the logos off of an Iphone from 1-4, most people would say either it’s iphone or iphone clone. That is what is known as design language in this industry. The 5 and 6 have a very similar design just use different materials and sizes. All your focusing on is the curved back, your ignoring the rest of the design, the button placements the location of the speakers/usb (on the bottom like the Mi4) the colors used, the lack of any design (other than your curve) that really sets it apart. And the front of the phones are near identical. This is not knock on Xiaomi anyone who knows me, knows I am one of their biggest fans. But their design language is boring, even with the curve.

            • Chong Wen Hao
              August 6, 2015

There is no use discussing this with you if you think Apple never changed their design until the 5. Your idea of a new design is different from most people. You do know there are a few Mi Note colors right? How many times have I mentioned that the frame has changed and you just ignored it?

            • balcobomber25
              August 6, 2015

Your problem is your confusing individual designs with design language and thinking they are the same thing.

            • Chong Wen Hao
              August 6, 2015

I never said I was talking about design language. When you just say design of a phone, it is the individual designs.

            • balcobomber25
              August 6, 2015

I have used the word design language throughout this entire convo….

            • Chong Wen Hao
              August 6, 2015

Not in this comment that is what I am talking about all this while. You said the design in this comment, not design language. If you had said design language here, I would have agreed with you and there would not be so much discussion. But you said design. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/9059fb2e9b13d3c31cdfaff83e7c314b46a8a394d2cabbf7765b27fec71c24c2.jpg

And I dont like the design of it…. I say right there it is typical Xiaomi (as in typical Xiaomi design language). TO ME every Xiaomi device is not a great design.

            • Chong Wen Hao
              August 6, 2015

That is the problem with your comment. The way you phrase the sentence do not say design language. Instead, by phrasing your sentence that way, you are referring to design and not design language.

            • balcobomber25
              August 6, 2015

I was referring to both lol. I don’t like the design of the Mi Note, it is boring to me. All of Xiaomi’s phones are boring to me because they all follow the same design language. Is that better or do you want to continue to argue that my opinion isn’t what I say it is?

            • Chong Wen Hao
              August 6, 2015

In your heart you are refering to both but the way you phrased your comment only refers to design. That is the problem. So you agree that you phrased your sentence badly?

              August 7, 2015

The fact that your spending all this time trying to prove me wrong suggests you deeply care how people think about what your phone looks like. If someone said my phone was ugly to them or that the sound quality wasnt as good as another phone, I would make a few comments back and forth then move on. But this has become deeply person for you.

I don’t own a product does not mean I never used it. I actually did a mini review for the Mi Note on Mi Community after I had a chance to hands-on it at their experience event.

Look at this image of all the Iphones together. Ignore the colors completely and just look at the designs of the phone, the shapes, camera placement, buttons, placement of logos etc. Pretend they are all the same colors. Their is very little to separate 1-4 other than size and slightly rounded corners. 5 and 6 share the same exact design language the difference is size and material (metal for 6). You can do the same thing with Meizu, Sony, Samsung, LG and HTC among others. Every brand has their design language which you dont’ seem to understand. Xiaomi’s is boring looking to me. To you it might be amazing.

In many OEMs, their phones have something unique in common that allows people to easily identify that the phone is made by the OEM. For example, LG phones have full rear buttons, Motorolla has a metal frame with that style of curve. I don’t see any of such unique similarities is Xiaomi phones.

No but a colleague of mine does and I have used his enough. The design just doesn’t excite me. I have owned multiple Xiaomi’s and only one had a good design for it’s time, the Mi3. The rest have been boring and drab but they are good devices so I put up with the design. This is all opinion though you might think it’s the greatest design ever.

Lol I have used the Mi Note with both headphones and its speakers. The sound quality is very good, but I have used better from Vivo before. For my money no one does audio better than Vivo. It’s just an opinion.

What headphones were you using when you tested the Mi Note and what audio format was the music you tested?

              Lol what is this an interrogation? I like Vivo’s sound better. I am not attacking the Mi Note it sounds good, just not as good as Vivo. But if you must know I use the same headphones whenever I test a phones audio and I test it with every format the phone supports. I use the following;

              1. The Xiaomi Piston 2 – I use these to replicate a normal “cheaper” pair of headphones that most people will buy in an electronics shop for $20.

              2. Scenheiser Momentum – one of the best headphone sets ever made. The best audio chips really come alive with these.

The thing about Mi Note is that it is able to power highend headphones that can never achieve its true performance with regular phones. Also, Mi Note supports lossless audio formats.

I have used the Mi Note to hear really high quality music at the Mi Note experience event and it is much better than regular phones so I can tell it is not just marketing. Do note (not a pun here) that by sound quality I am talking about using it with both headphones and speakers.

Have you tried the sound? It is really good for headphones. The bottom facing speaker is also one of the best I have heard. The sad thing is that it is bottom facing.

              August 4, 2015

Yes but then again I have never used a Xiaomi phone with bad sound. It’s one of the difference for premium brands like Xiaomi (and Meizu, OnePlus, Vivo etc) that often isnt talked about. They use all premium components inside their phones. I am not a huge fan of bottom facing speakers, the one of the MX5 is very easy to cover with your hand. But I prefer them to rear facing, front is the best but with phones trying to get smaller and thinner those are all but gone.

MT6795? Unlikely, given the firm ties between Xiaomi and Qualcomm. Could it be the SD808?

      August 2, 2015

Qualcomm is only an investor of Xiaomi, it does not have any control of daily business activities of Xiaomi.

My guess is maybe Xiaomi domestic Mi4i, Mi4S or Mi5 will get the SD808 (so called phone with namecode Libra in the benchmarks) and Mi5 Note is going to get the SD820 chipset.

        August 2, 2015

Qualcomm doesn’t have any control but Xiaomi has relied on them for all of their SoC’s in the past year. Even amid controversy over both the 615 and 810, Xiaomi still stuck with them when there were other SoC’s available. In fact Xiaomi is actually Qualcomm’s biggest customer as such they most likely have a contract with Qualcomm that provides them with better prices and kickbacks for using devices like the 810.

That hasn’t prevented Xiaomi from using other SoC’s over the years as they have used MTK and Leadcore chips but when push comes to shove they usually choose the SD.

All in all, the only likely 2.0Ghz SoCs available right now seem to be MT6795 and SD808. Both fine with me; Xiaomi will disrupt the mid-range market big time when they use either of these.

I don’t think it’s going to be either one of those. I think it’s going to be the Sanpdragon 620 which is clocked at 1.8Ghz. TENNA’s stats aren’t always 100% correct especially when it comes to SoC speeds.

            • Guaire
              August 3, 2015

If TENAA did a mistake it could be the SD615 rather than the SD620.

It’s too powerful for the class. It’s even faster than the SD810 CPU wise according to early Geekbench results.

Quad A72 cluster means considerably larger die size comparison to the SD615, also probably it will contain a rather hefty GPU for the class.

But the SD808 has 6 core instead to 8.

          August 3, 2015

No doubt they have a special relationship with Qualcomm, but chances that Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 will get the SD808 seems very small to me (referring to monkeytree). Especially given the price point of the previous Redmi Note version.

I am not sure they have much choice either about the availability of different SOC’s, so maybe they have to use SD615 and 810, because there are no other competitive options. After the purchase of Leadcore (I believe around the same time Mediatek were producing MT6752 and MT6732 chipsets), we don’t know what happened between the relationship between Mediatek and Xiaomi.

Huawei and Samsung also have SOC’s, but the question is are they willing to sell their SOC’s to another major rival. Given the highly competitive domestic market between Chinese manufacturers, chances that Huawei is going to sell their SOC’s to Xiaomi seems small to me at the moment.

Samsung have sold SOC’s to Chinese manufactures (including Meizu) before, but the phones with Samsung chipsets were usually released much later than the Samsung phones. I don’t see Samsung selling their high-end 7420 chipset for example at around the same time to other manufacturers at the moment. So I don’t see a competitive option to SD 810.

            August 3, 2015

I don’t think it will have a SD808 either but I have a good feeling it’s going to be a Qualcomm maybe the 620.

Samsung already sells their SoC’s to a competitor in Meizu and they sell their camera’s, displays, batteries etc to anyone who wants them. Samsung parts is a separate component from Samsung phones. Samsung would gladly sell them the SoC’s, it’s just added business for them. It’s not going to hurt Samsungs bottom line at all. But Xiaomi has a very good relationship with Qualcomm and really has no reason to buy other SoC’s. They never actually purchased Leadcore, that was a rumor but they did co-develop and finance the chip used in the 2A and they could still be working on chips with them.

              August 3, 2015

I know Samsung is selling a lot of components to others, but I have yet to see Samsung willing to sell their flagship chipset 7420 and future flagship chipsets for example at around the same time as their Samsung flagship models (not 5-6 months later to other mobile manufactures).

If that is not changing, most mobile manufacturers still have to rely on Snapdragon SOC’s for their high-end phones in the future (and maybe Mediatek chipsets), because they usually can’t wait 5-6 months to release their flagship phone after Samsung releases their flagship phones.

SD620 seems a very good choice, but I am not sure if that chipset is ready yet for mass production.

            • balcobomber25
              August 3, 2015

It’s not that Samsung isn’t willing, it’s that there isn’t a great demand for it. If Meizu for instance wanted it for their MX5 Pro (if it even exists) Samsung would sell it to them in a heartbeat. And anyone else for that matter.

The problem is most companies have a long standing relationship with Qualcomm and as such they get better deals by sticking with Qualcomm than venturing off to another supplier. Mediatek hasnt had the best success with mass producing flagship SoC’s but that has all changed with the X10. Will be interesting to see 820 vs X20.

Hell if it will have 6795 itl be hard to look at the competitors but the chances are thin considering the snapdragon deal itll most likely be 615 or if we are lucky 808 (impossible lel
but considering the issues with mi4i they may have gone for 6795 but that means theyl caniballize their own phone ( mi note ) like meizu did wit. The m1 note/mx4 pro

@balcobomber25:disqus i agree that the design language for Xiaomi is the same very plain and simple and it could be called boring but its no different for Meizu and these are both companies that i think are great. Meizu have milked its design for years the same curve over and over again at least with Xiaomi you can tell what model you are holding. Turn over the meizu and guess between the mx4 mx4 pro and the meizu note 1 & note 2 if any company has milked a design its Meizu and also have brought out phones leaving you wondering what is the point of them
