It’s no secret Xiaomi has been having a problem of plenty with regards to SoC choice. Xiaomi phones currently ship with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon SoCs, MediaTek chips, and there’s always the Leadcore talk going around.
Xiaomi are in the midst of a not-so-successful stint with the Snapdragon 615 for the Xiaomi Mi 4i (review). Also, the newest phone from the company — the Redmi Note 2 — surprised everyone when it was announced with the Helio X10 from MediaTek. This came right after the patent issue that Xiaomi faced in India, something which will also stop Xiaomi from launching the Redmi Note 2 in the country.
Gizchina News of the week
Nonetheless, a solution seems to have been found by the company, in in-house SoCs. What that would do is allow Xiaomi to minimize costs even further, thereby increasing profits/reducing selling prices of its phones. Also, greater control over the SoC design will allow Xiaomi to make its processors exactly how it wants, and not have terms dictated by another company.
China’s Huawei and Korea’s Samsung are two companies which have made the switch to making their own SoCs and have been fairly successful at it. Xiaomi is certainly big enough to consider designing and producing their own chips already, but it’ll yet be interesting to see how they fare.

Another useless article…
Just a rewriting of old news, nothing new here that was not already told here.
So much garbage lately!
Technically – My mom gave me my body so screw that – Im gonna build one ! homebrew style!
I think this is the future of the industry for the premium brands. Apple, Samsung and Huaweii are all making their own chips. LG and Xiaomi are reportedly making their own as well. It’s only a matter of time until Lenovo explores this step. The biggest loser in all of this would be Qualcomm, Mediatek has a near stranglehold on the smaller companies.
Hi I’m glad I meet you here, do you think it would benefit the users if xiaomi made its own chip?
only if they make it good. 🙂
Yes sensei!!
It’s hard to answer this question without knowing what specifically Xiaomi is planning. If they are going to emulate Huaweii and have the majority of their new devices use their own chips it can be beneficial to them and the consumer in the long run as ti will decrease costs. If it’s just another one off chip like the Leadcore one for a budget phone there is no immediate benefit to the consumers.
Something to keep in mind is Qualcomm is an investor in Xiaomi, this could be something they are working on together or this could fracture that relationship completely. Will be interesting to keep an eye on.
Well Qualcomm has other problems to solve right now, or they will go down anyway 🙂
I don’t know if they will go down, even releasing 3 chips full of problems companies are still buying them left and right.
yes it is a pity!
Personally I don’t understand it there are better chips from Samsung and Mediatek available.
I do like MTK, but they don’t deserve to be called better, yet! They have an awesome super fast development cycle of only 6 months, but don’t support their old chipsets… so anything older than 6 months.
And well yeah Samsung or the Huawei are good!
don’t play favorites when it comes to SoC’s, they all have released good and bad chipsets. But for this current gen of 64 bit SoC’s Mediatek has been better than Qualcomm, Samsung is the best overall.
Well MTK is only better if you watch at the chip in detail, and realize that MTK gives constant power for 20 mins straight. But most people just look at a the benchmark results of a cold device and don’t give a fuck about daily usage scenarios.
I won’t trust this brand at all. Their previous flagship i.e. Mi4 is still on Kitkat. Won’t officially speak about their plans and when users are tough questions on forum, mods haunt them like hell.
you wont trust them because they didnt jump the gun and upgrade to an OS most are having issues with?
I don’t think you’re following the latest news. An engineer from Xiaomi declared on Weibo declared that they aren’t updating because Qualcomm won’t give updates, while other manufacturers having the same chipset have upgraded to Lollipop. Second, if Xiaomi is not giving us the update because they don’t want us to have issues, then why are they not making an official announcement about the same? Anyone would understand if this is the only concern.
PS: The MIUI based on kitkat itself is buggy till this date. For ex: The crackling headphone issue which was not seen in MIUI v5 creped in MIUI v6 for Mi4 users and though majority have confirmed about the same the bug has not been solved even after 6-7 months of reporting. 😛
i had a Mi4 for 8 months never had a single issue with headphones.
Ummm!!! There is a bug thread already at official Mi forums which has been confirmed and yet not solved. Do some research, you’ll find it.
I dont need to do any research, I owned the phone and used it everyday with headphones at the Gym. Never once had an issue. I used it with three different sets of headphones over 8 months: Seinheser, JBL/OnePlus and Xiaomi Pistons.
LULZ!!!! Then why would it be confirmed on MIUI official forums? Or are you going to generalise on the basis of your personal experience? All I can make from your comments is that you’re a fanboy. 😀
It doesn’t matter what is on a forum, my personal experience with the phone tells me there was no problems for me. I know several people with the phone who have no issues with headphones. There are several owners here you could ask them their experiences.
You mean the post with all of 4 people complaining about the issue? Not exactly a widespread problem. Which makes it even harder for Xiaomi to fix it seeing as it is only affecting a small amount of people.
There is no way to prove it that you or your friends don’t face it while the official bug reporting page has confirmed it as a bug so all your rebuttals don’t make sense. BTW Why digress from the main topic? The question I raised was not if you faced the problem or not but about incompetent Xiaomi who won’t solve the bug.
“You mean the post with all of 4 people complaining about the issue?” – Stop generalising. It forces Irony to go for a shat. It is evident that you are a fanboy protecting Xiaomi for all the wrong reasons. Get well soon. 😀
There is no way to prove anyone posting on a forum is telling the truth either but you have no problem taking their word for it. Those posts aren’t “official” bug reports, anything you report as a “bug” will show up in that section whether take a look here at all the “bugs” people report on. Working on it means the forum mods are investigating whether it is a bug or not. It has nothing to do with me being a fan of Xiaomi or not. I can tell you as an actual Xiaomi user I have no issues with headphones. I can post that on a forum if you would like to make it “official” in your mind.
Here is everything reported as a bug, look at the column that says status and you will see it is not an official bug:
http://en.miui.com/forum.php?mod=bugfeedback&fid=5
“There is no way to prove anyone posting on a forum is telling the truth either but you have no problem taking their word for it. – Seriously dude? Do you know how we, the beta members report bugs? Let me explain it to you. We create a bug thread and all the beta members confirm it and after providing proper catlogs, it is tagged as “confirmed” and will be sent to the devs at Xiaomi. If you’re not aware of the process, please don’t spew rhetoric.
Other point, it is not a mi4 device problem but has been seen on all the phones having Miui v6.
I realize what beta testing is. And in beta testing not every user will experience the same issues, which makes it a lot harder to pinpoint what causes it. You dont seem to understand that just because a few people experience that problem it doesn’t mean everyone using MIUI v6 does. I use it and don’t have that problem. You apparently haven’t used it at all so your not real qualified to even speak on it.
I said this is how bugs are reported and this bug was present in the stable build. Anyway, I’ll quit now as I know that I am trying to talk objectively with a fanboy.
You’ll quite because you have little clue what your talking about. You are talking about a product that you clearly never used and talking like your an expert on it.
There is no difference between you and iSheeps. Look at GSM Arena, they reported the same, i.e. to much noise and distortion. Are they clueless too? PS: I own Mi4 and you’re a fan boy which is the problem.
i am a fanboy I’ve never denied it lol. that doesn’t change the fact my headphones work fine. if you followed me and didn’t just assume you know everything, you would know as a fan of Xiaomi I am one of the first to call them out. I have been against the Mi Note Pro since launch. But again a forum post doesn’t change the fact that my headphones work fine….
” I am a fanboy ” – Fanboys don’t have a tendency of accepting failures.
“But again a forum post doesn’t change the fact” – It is a bug thread and the same has can be confirmed when you look at the GSMArena review.
Okay and several users of the phone have confirmed they dont have that issues. I guess actual usage only matters when it proves your point.
Several users?
Guess you missed all those posts in the MIUI forums of people saying they dont have that issue. Or you just labeled them “fanboys” and decided their usage doesn’t count. From the start of this I have said some may experience, I don’t. But according to you that is not possible because someone on a forum has the issue so everyone must have it!
http://en.miui.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=115713&extra=page%3D5%26orderby%3Drecommend_add&page=1
And you must have missed this post:
“please update the version to miui5.8.4, should be fixed
let me know the result. thanks” No complaints after this post about the same issue.
You might have missed to more posts.
“Agreed, the quality is better but the max volume is definitely lower than before.” -> I could have done that with editing a file or two. This is not a fix.
You even missed the last comment -> “This issue is back in MIUI 7, 5.8.22”
the comment that has yet to be confirmed. Again though there are 100 million MIUI users and about 12 comments about this “issue”. I can find 12 people that have no issues.
“the comment that has yet to be confirmed.” -> but the same does not apply when you told me to read the comment. Stop defending the indefensible.
Just borrowed a friends Mi4, used headphones with no issues.
hehehe!!! and those odd 50-60 reputed members are lying.
Never said they were. From the start of this one of us (me) has stated that not every person that uses a ROM like MIUI will have the same issues, there are too many factors to consider with each user. The other person (you) has said that because someone a forum has the problem, everyone must have it.
Look! No one can vouch fro your claims about you not having the problem or you got your friends phone and he did not have the problem too because from the first comment itself your’re prejudiced towards Xiaomi. I have not said it because other person on the person has a problem but I am facing it too on my Mi4 so please keep your judgements for yourself.
“someone a forum has the problem, everyone must have it.” -> There is not a single person having a problem but odd 60-70 people have reported the same. Even if it is not seen on every single device that does not save Xiaomi from criticism of not solving it even after 5-6 months.
You cant personally vouch for anything on the internet whether I say it or someone in a forum says it, unless you physically hold their device and see the problem. People who don’t have problems don’t post about them on forums, there are 100+ million MIUI users, 60-70 are posting about a problem (even though the numbers in those forum posts aren’t really that high due to repeat comments).
First you presume that everyone having a Xiaomi device is on the forum. And there are 60-70 people who have confirmed it in the bug thread. Open the general forum and look at the threads being opened about the same.
I don’t assume anything. But what I do know as a fact there are 814,407 active members on the MIUI forums. 70 people having a problem is .000085% of active users. If it was such a widespread issue you would have a lot more than 70 posts.
You’re assuming that everyone would come and confirm at the bug thread and that is why I asked you to take a look at all the general threads opened about the same.
If it was a major bug you would have hundreds of threads and replies. I’ve been part of MIUI forums for years, when a huge bug that everyone experiences is found people comment on it.
I have been too and your assertion of 100’s of threads makes no sense. Even if 100 people face this issues, it is serious and needs to be solved and this not happening for months itself shows that Xiaomi cannot be trusted. You can’t even back Xiaomi when it comes to making an official announcement about their upgrade plans. Every device before Mi4i is on Kitkat, Mi4i still has 5.0.2 base and without updating it first they now release Mi4c with 5.1.1 base. All in all, the way Xiaomi guess what, if such treatment goes on the company will sink like many other big smartphone brands.
Except for Xiaomi is the fastest growing brand in the industry. But let me know how that sinking thing works out.
They are but does that make it unsinkable? No.
No but they’re amazing customer service and excellent products makes it as close to unsinkable as you can get in this business.
Amazing customer service? You might want to check the forum again. Esp. those who are not in China.
A forum exists for people to complain. People who have positive customer service experiences don’t often post about it. So of course you only see negative ones. If their support sucked they wouldn’t continue to have record sales. They also wouldn’t provide weekly bug fixes.
i’m all for it as long as it makes xiaomi stuff cheaper.
reminds me of Apple, just that apple sells it super expensive.
