After piling on the pixels with the Meizu MX4 Pro, Meizu bosses have now taken a change in direction and confirm a 1080 panel will be used on their next phone.
For the foreseeable future all Meizu phones will abandon the use of 2K panels and focus on 1080 screens. The news mirrors Meizu’s desire to become more Apple-like in their approach to phone design and specification.
Bosses state that users shouldn’t just be concerned with hardware parameters and should look at the user experience as a whole. They go on to say that even the best CPU’s can’t take full advantage of 2K panels and a 1080 screen is still more than up to the task of living on a flagship phone.
If we look back at the history of Meizu we can see that this is actually nothing new for the company, and instead of moving forward to new goals they are actually taking 2 steps back. For example the Meizu MX3 sported features that weren’t deemed ‘flagship’ at the time of launch, in the same way iPhones don’t match Android flagships on paper.

It appears to us that Meizu used the most recent product launches as a means to boost Meizu’s fan base and popularity, and are now moving back to their original focus. But these switches in direction aren’t great news for the end user, who will soon get bored with Meizu changing direction with every gust of wind.
Back to their next phone. The upcoming Meizu flagship is believed to be called the Niux. The phone will come with a 1080 display, and use a Samsung Exynos 7420 processor and either 3-4GB RAM. Camera specifications will remain similar to current phones with a 5 mega-pixel up front and 21 mega-pixel camera on the rear.
New X, lol. Lets wait and see what the 21 mega-pixel camera can do.

I love this announcement and after using a Meizu they are winning me over from Xiaomi every day. 2K displays on screens this big are just a waste of resources. The 1080 display on the MX5 is beautiful and crisp.

Yea they do seem to do that a lot. But for me as long as they continue to make good products none of that matters. There is so much innovation in this industry coming from China, it doesn’t really matter to me who is first and who copies.
As I remember they were talking about how good 720p displays for battery life at Mate 2’s launch. After that they jumped to 1080p.
They are not using 2K displays yet, because their in house SoCs are too weak for it.
Now their new Mate uses a battery which its capacity less than 3000 mAh.
The Helios X10 in the MX5 handled a 2k display in several devices without an issue.

For the price Meizu definitely has one of the best values available.
Smart move, 1080p is more than enough, besides Meizu’s phones battery life is already not that good.
One thing where Meizu really needs to improve on if they want to succeed outside of China is with Flyme itself. It is an excellent and easy to use OS but it needs a complete language overhaul. Trying to use a Flyme account is an act of frustration if you cant read Chinese.
Am I the only one who doesn’t care about these new Soc ? Everything is already super-fast and super-smooth. Just bring us awesome battery life & awesome new features Meizu
That new soc will save your battery life. Exynos 7420 is for now the only 14nm cpu on mobile phones.
Brave choice, no longer willing to compete in the pixel rat race. Now I hope their second decision will be a true global support for the 4G network. As in: for heaven’s sake, start providing 800 MHz (B20 band) support on your future devices!
Not just 800 but the US Bands as well.
Finally a manufacturer with some sense! This should make the phone less expensive and increase battery life and performance.
The Exynos 7420 will score over 80k at 1080p in Antutu, man that will be tough to beat.
