‘Edge Tap’ enabled Xiaomi Mi4c launched, here’s what you need to know

As expected (and leaked, and rumoured, and speculated), Xiaomi has made official the Mi 4c smartphone.

It shares quite a lot with the Mi4i which was launched in India in April this year, but improvements have been attempted on areas where the Mi 4i has lacked. This includes a RAM update; the Mi4c will come not only in a 2GB RAM version but also a slightly expensive 3GB RAM variant.

Coming to the specifications, the Mi4c will come with the 64-bit hexa-core Snapdragon 808 processor along with the Adreno 418 GPU. The display will remain the same elegant 5-inch 1920 x 1080p Sunlight Display panel we saw on the Mi4i, but will come from either Sharp or AUO or LG this time.

Moving on, the Mi 4c will again share the main camera resolution with the Mi 4i at 13 mega-pixel. It’ll either be a Sony IMX258 sensor or the Samsung S5K3M2. Interestingly, Xiaomi have added PDAF (Phase Detection Autofocus) to the Mi 4c.

There’s a couple more interesting additions too, in an IR blaster which supports 2000+ appliances, including DSLR cameras, according to Xiaomi. The other addition is what Xiaomi call ‘Edge Tap’, where the phone will respond to light taps on either side. In the company’s words, ‘both sides of Mi 4c respond to light taps (for example, double tap to go back, single tap to snap a photo in Camera, among others).’

Mi 4c (5)

A 3080mAh battery will ship with the Mi 4c, which will support Quick Charge 2.0 with the bundled USB Type-C cable.

A common gripe that Xiaomi users have had with their phones is lack of the very popular Double Tap to Wake feature. The Mi 4c will support this out of the box.

The 2GB RAM/16GB ROM version will be 1299 Yuan (US$203) while the 3GB RAM/32GB ROM Mi 4c will go for 1499 Yuan (US$235). The lack of an initial 32GB ROM version for the Mi 4i drew flak for Xiaomi, and they’ve certainly addressed the issue with the new Mi 4c.

can i get Mi 4c with 3GB RAM but with 16GB ROM and not 32GB ROM, because i dont need 32GB, and if want more then i will go and buy micro-sd of 64GB

      September 22, 2015

And where exactly will you put that micro-sd in the Mi4c if I may ask? For me 32GB is the minimum if there is no micro-sd support but I prefer 64GB.

Yep, shows how much they care about the European market. This didn’t come as a surprise though since they never really supported this band.

Ah well, one more week and the N5 will be presented which has similar specs but a higher price. I prefer stock Android over MIUI anyways.

I’ve got a OPO 64GB bamboo edition for free (don’t ask me how)

a quick look at the prices of the old Honor 6 3/32 and i see that average reseller price is about 300$. the 3/16 if about 275$.
if you got the 3/32 version of the honor 6 @ 199$ then you got a good deal, but i can’t find that price anywhere.

Double tap to wake was invented as long as Nokia N8, I believe I read from some comments around the internet. Double to wake feature become popular when LG G2 put this feature. After that, It became widely use in many smart phone brands except a few like Samsung, Apple and Xiaomi (until Mi4c).

Due to TAP feature only Mi 4c is not so unique this we already using in Yureka Yuphoria and Lenovo K3 Note like phones in India it may be improved alittle bit by giving 5.5″ disp. why Xiaomi is not giving 5.5 or + size even mi note & note pro Redminote 2 is not given to India……….All Useless…………

Double tap to wake was invented as long as Nokia N8, I believe I read from some comments around the internet. Double to wake feature become popular when LG G2 put this feature. After that, It became widely use in many smart phone brands except a few like Samsung, Apple and Xiaomi (until Mi4c).

I wonder why they don’t use that feature, I have a Z5s phone with Miui v7 ROM and double tap works pretty good

Interesting price if the 32gb ROM version is sold around $270. But why that awful white color all the time? I meant that the black version will be around 1 month later…a new device will be available at that time with better specs. Please Xiaomi release the white version at the end next time.

Will the mi4c work in the U.S ? I’m considering buying one but I have no idea if I could use it on Sprint. Any advice ?

Yes. It only works on Sprint though according to the website.

It might work on Sprint, but not at LTE speed. It might fall back to HSPA+ or 3G. Check the phone ‘s specs and compare them to Sprint’s wireless frequencies (Google it).

Those bezels look huge, and no microsd.
I might reconsider my next phone choice…

Ha ha, they should add camera OIS if they’re going to use “tap” to enable shutter button! How’s that gonna work, otherwise? For the same price as the 3/32GB model, I’m still leaning towards Innos D6000.
