OnePlus: About
Those following OnePlus proceedings here on GizChina might already be aware of the company’s roots. Headed by ex-OPPO chief Pete Lau, OnePlus is a startup with an aim to deliver the most usable hardware at an affordable price. Quite clearly, the company isn’t keen on just throwing the kitchen sink at you, but rather a more fulfilling user experience.
What’s most exciting about the OnePlus venture is that the company has a partner in the very well known CyanogenMod Inc. CyanogenMod is perhaps the most popular 3rd party firmware for Android phones, hugely popular with enthusiasts from around the world.
OnePlus One: Specifications
OnePlus made us play the waiting game for quite some time before starting to spill the beans on the One’s specifications. Thanks to numerous leaks, announcements and spy photos, we know quite a bit about the device now, and as previously mentioned, you will perhaps be able to make up your mind on whether you want the device or not.
OnePlus even hosted an ‘Ask Me Anything’ session on Reddit, which allowed those keeping track of the device to get in touch with folks behind OnePlus for better insight.
5.5-inch 1080p JDI Display
With the average smartphone screen size going up every passing day, it is but natural for OnePlus to include something which would please a major chunk of the market. The company decided to go with a 5.5-inch 1080p display sourced from well-known manufacturer JDI. There were talks of a 1440 x 2560 pixel display, which would put the One directly against the OPPO Find 7; however, these rumours were rubbished once the company divulged display info about a week back.
While many hoped for a smaller display, Pete Lau assured the world that it is a 5.5-inch panel that we need. The picture of a OnePlus One stacked (and hidden) beneath a Sony Xperia Z1 went viral on the web. Lau basically wanted to show that the 5.5-inch screen’d One could hide under an Xperia Z1 which comes with a 5-inch screen.
Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB RAM
Gizchina News of the week
With the sort of hype that the OnePlus One was enjoying, it was fair for those following proceedings to have high expectations. We have to admit, even we expected the device to have a Snapdragon 805, or at least a Snapdragon 801. However, to the disappointment of many, OnePlus announced that their first phone would have only a Snapdragon 800 SoC.
That being said, the company again did a fair job at convincing us that Snapdragon 800 was the way to go, citing balance between availability and cost as the reason. To think of it, it might actually work out well with the much less resource hungry CyanogenMod OS taken centre stage instead of a heavily skinned, ugly looking ROM.
That was for the official announcement from the company, but thanks to a leaked screenshot from the AnTuTu database we were treated to the RAM info on the device, which stays at a good 2GB. While many flagships have started popping up with 3GB on-board, we at GizChina think 2GB of RAM is enough to drive a moderate to advanced user, especially when paired with a light OS such as CyanogenMod.
3100mAh battery, LTE connectivity
Poor battery life is something that concerns (and undeniably, affects) one and all, and OnePlus hope to eliminate this problem by including a 3100mAh non-removable battery on the OnePlus One. Along with this, the company said that there would be a technology to further extend usage on a single charge. In fact, they even called it ‘mystery tech’ saving us the effort of trying to make things interesting for our readers!
On why they the went non-removable route, the company said a removable battery would mean a loss of about 20% of the capacity, which they thought was crucial for their phone and something they couldn’t afford.
The device is all set to appeal to users from all around the globe with its unlocked radio which has support for 4G LTE!
Cameras, storage
Only recently, OnePlus announced that the One will have a 13 mega-pixel rear camera which would come from Sony factories. It’s the Sony Exmor IMX214 sensor, which on the OnePlus One will do 4K video capture, which will make the device among the cheaper ones to feature 4K video (remember, the device will sell for under $400?). The 13 mega-pixel shooter will have a f/2.0 aperture and the ability to record slow-motion video at 120fps. On the front, the OnePlus One will feature a 5 mega-pixel snapper which should please selfie lovers and video call users alike.
Other
Only few hours back (at the time of writing), the company announced that there will be a bit of customization thrown in, in the form of what OnePlus call ‘StyleSwap’ rear cases for the device. Among other styles and textures that might be made available in the future, the company would be offering Silk, Sandstone, Denim, Bamboo, and Kevlar textured StyleSwap covers. What’s more, the covers would be made out of their respective materials, meaning Bamboo out of a stick of bamboo, Kevlar out of actual kevlar and so on!
The company has also been active on their forums, taking part in discussions and interacting with fans and followers. This has lead many to think of OnePlus as a very ‘approachable’ company, something which other (even well established) ones are after.
Another thing you need to keep in mind (yes, again) that the OnePlus One will come with the very efficient CyanogenMod OS, tailor made for the device. The software is light on resources, and offers very high levels of customisability. Also, we might as well see OnePlus adopt the very successful OPPO model wherein users can request for features and other things, which are scrutinized by the software team, after which a decision is made whether or not the feature is to be added.
Verdict
So here we ask you — would you let go of your current smartphone to make way for the 5.5-inch, Snapdragon 800 powered OnePlus One? Are you willing to give a rather ambitious startup a chance with your next toy? Or do you have other ideas (Hint: OPPO Find 7)?
We’re very interested to know what you think. Perhaps a 1440p display would’ve sealed the deal for you, maybe you think 1080p is enough, etc… we’d love to hear from you! . Let us know of your thoughts on the OnePlus One in the comments section below!

$250 would have been my max on this. Even then, though I understand the specs involved. I still would question my purchase due to resale value to US customers…
Yep, I agree. in the 200-250$ price range for the North American Market.
Any who, they have a great team, all they need is to make the phone something everyone will buy.
My main concern is, what would these phones be able to sell for in the u_s?
what is the (battery) mystery tech? please let us know if it has been revealed, thanks!
I believe it will be the same as VOOC on the Find 7. It is very fast charging! 0% – 70% in around 30 minutes when I timed it last night. Fully charged in under an hour, your can see the % go up!
WOW! Nice improvement!
fabulous! i believe xiaomi will come up with somethin similar, its a shame if they dont! in mi3s hopefully or starting from mi4! fast charging should be a standard for flagship devices…and if possible in lower-mid ends too! 🙂
That’s cool, but what makes it “interesting technology” when Oppo uses it, and “mystery magic” when OPO does?
Hi andi 🙂 not seen you on OnePlus forum for a while, have you been busy testing alot of phones?
Not had much time to pop over there, will take a look next week 🙂
Andi, I sent you a message on Hangouts the other day, let me know if you received it, thanks 🙂
Sorry don’t think I did
Hi Andi how’s it going. I have been faced with a dilemma for the past year. I have been interested in purchasing some smart phones and reselling them in the US to start an import business. My problem is I’ve been reading about products discussed on gizchina and have never made a purchase. Either the price goes up when I investigate importing them to the point where I don’t feel I will make much of a profit. Or they are not available for outside buyers. I was hoping I wouldn’t have to travel to China until at least after my 5th or 6th successful batch resale. Can you shed any light or give some advice on how I should go about doing this? Appreciate any help you can enlighten me with 🙂
If I were you I would not bother unless you are planning your own OEM phone, there just isn’t all that much profit in it.
Can you contact me on hangouts when you get a chance? You should be able to see me. I added you a week or two ago…
I’d like to see a OnePlus One Mini, 4.7″ screen, 130x64x9 .. same specs (only 720p and of course a slightly smaller battery). That would make this something I’d go for. But now… No OnePlus, even though they really are trying to convine the public with a huge amount of spam lol.
+1
Same here (maybe 4,5″), plus dual boot with Ubuntu Touch… 😉
128GB version + 64bits CPU… OnePlus 2 mini?
International availability will always be a plus for any chinese company..what is the use of a great phone if not anyone can have it..Any also limit the purchase of a certain credit card to 1-2 units to avoid resellers boarding supplies…
I think it’s an all round great smartphone. But I suppose that the most determining factor would be the price. If it goes beyond $300, then it’s not for me. And I would’ve wanted a device with 32GB internal memory. I love to have a lot of space in my devices for losing up applications and stuffs too. But then I’m already considering the IUNI and that also is coming with a bargain price to.
As I said many times before. Too much hype and noise. Nothing interesting has been shown to this day. Nowadays if you wanna succeed on the market especially if you’re a new company you have to offer something standoutish. Not the case here really.
And again, I really don’t get the point why they all think the user like to have 5.5″… this is to BIG!
No it’s not, for the past year I have been using a galaxy note 2. I currently have a new note 3 in the shop getting reflashed. The note 3 sells for 700 to 800 dollars here in the states, I only paid $220 for this one. Haha ha eat your heart out…
If you feel these phones are too big for you, A nice (narrow screened) apple phone would probably suit you 😉
Of course then, you would become a part of the flocks of isheep….
Please where did you get the note 3 at such a price?
Sounds too good to be true 🙂
No, all I’ve said is true. Craigslist is where I have gotten our S3’s, Note 2’s and now Note 3’s. My Note 2 looked like new when I bought it aprox 2 yrs ago (and still does), for $200 from a waitress through Craigslist. Same goes for my wife’s Note 2 as well as my Mom’s… All for $200 or a tad less per… Now I have been searching for several months on and off for a Note 3 at the price I want to pay. Finally I snagged one, BUT here’s the catch. It’s like new and can boot into recovery etc etc and can not boot into it’s installed ROM (boot loop). I used ODEN and a new PIT file + Android stock 4.4 ROM to get it running again. What I found out after was that even though it looked to be working fine, the modem/radio portion was missing and couldn’t connect to any towers. It is currently sitting in the local cell repair/flashing shop that I’ve used for several years now, getting repaired and flashed to my Boost Mobile #… 😉
Another snag is that since I used the latest 4.4 roll out update, the tech in the shop is having problems and can not fix it until someone brings in another Sprint Note 3 to get flashed, then he will extract the missing modem/radio file that is needed to get this one straight 😉 Seems like a hassle to some BUT the cost for one of these without a contract is between $700-800 depending where you go and to flash the phone is $50. I think I did very well despite the hold up’s…
Now of course if the options coming out of China equate to something like this Note 3 for a fantastic price, I would buy from there, but there’s ALWAYS a catch or snag. This is why I haven’t landed on something to purchase in bulk and resell… I’m still waiting for Andi to respond to my question/request, since he lives there 😉
Furthermore if anyone still doubts my story, I’ll add to it…
I had to drive to the hospital (10:30pm) that my daughter was born in (1/2 hr away) to pick up the Note 3 from an X-ray tech that works (I guess) in the trama section near the heli pad… It’s worth it though, to get one of these for $220 in MINT condition…
I own the Note 2 by myself, and it is just to big. I prefer my find 5 over it. You cant say “no its not” it is a personal favour. If you read recent polls about it 80% is saying 5″ is fair enough more is uneccesary.
I’m 6′ tall 190lbs and I think it’s fine for me. I look forward to receiving my Note 3 from the tech shop, soon I hope. Then I’m going to sell my note 2 & it will pay for the cost of the new phone… With nooooo stupid contract, lol
Me to i woul’d like to buy a phone, but this to me looks like a liittle Tablet.
I have a dilemma, I have been searching for something I can import and resell in the US as far as phablets are concerned. There’s always complications that seem to arise. I was hoping I wouldn’t have to travel to China to start this import venture until after the 5th batch/purchase. Can anyone shed some light on this idea.
Well, first i need to know the final price =P
Hi there im chinda a member on the official OnePlus forum, the 16gb version will cost under $400 & the 64gb version under $500. Join the forum 🙂 OnePlus.net
Snapdragon 800 and 1080p seems like “settling” to me.
With that said, I might get reeled in by the multi-band LTE, IFF it really ships with it. Considering the companies proclivity for marketing hype, the LTE bands they released it their first leak may be from “adding up” all the bands on several different variants of the device, and NOT all in the same model. I don’t know, and I DON’T want to create a rumor, but they’ve pulled back on every other spec so I’ve got doubts.
The best thing that OPO could do right now is make an official release and cut out the bullshit stunts.
I would prefer the OnePlus One to have the 801. It’s a pin compatible replacement that’s already available. I don’t believe the cost difference between 800 and 801 is going to be very significant.
For me, it lacks the dual-sim…
I guess I will wait for both OnePlus One and Xiaomi Mi4 to be released and decide after that…
Folks, hip hip hooray!
The OnePlus One gets the 801! 🙂

the thing about display size in countries like china and korea where the people are smaller and therefore have smaller hands, the phones are huuge. in germany the most people say 5inch is the limit. you know who needs a 300+ horsepower car for normal city driving or just 90mph???
My opinion is somebody who likes to play and loves videos size doesnt matter get aas huge as you want! for people who want old school phone like 6230i or something everything over 5inch is a no go! and there are many people who doesnt care about that as long as it is what the most people buy they will buy it as well!!
Do you think that the Oneplus one will have NFC?
Tough to say, simply because NFC isn’t as popular (in demand) as it was about a year back. But yeah I’d say the One will pack NFC.
I hope the dual SIM version and 5″ display are available
