iOcean X9, super slim alloy body and for pre-order now

The super slim, alloy bodied iOcean X9 is now up for preorder with early customers receiving some free gifts. Keep reading for more details.

iOcean already launched the iOcean MT6752 Rock earlier this year. The phone managed to attract plenty of fans, but the iOcean team realised that there is still a market for a smaller flagship device. Their answer to this was to launch another phone with 5-inch display and similar high-end specs, that phone is the iOcean X9.

Physically there are major differences between the new iOcean X9 and the current iOcean MT6752 Rock. First of all the X9 is a 5-inch phone and has a smaller footprint (144.5 x 70.2mm). The chassis on the X9 is a slender alloy model not dissimilar to that found on Huawei phones and measures just 6.5mm thick. It also features an elegant double glass design.

Usually when we see smaller phones launched the hardware is downgraded, so it is a refreshing change to see that iOcean have packed the iOcean X9 with top of the range components. The 5-inch screen is a 1920 x 1080 panel, there is dual SIM support, octacore MT6752 processor, 3GB RAM, LTE, micro SD card memory expansion and a 13 mega-pixel IMX214 Sony camera.

iOcean are also showing Lollipop will become available on the official specifications page of their website.

Pre-sales for the iOcean X9 have already started with the cost coming in at $249.99 with an included power bank and protective case coming with all phones ordered before May 16th. Phones ordered between May 17-27 will cost the same with just a protective case, while orders of the X9 made after the 28th will be at a higher $269.99 RRP.

If only it had a TouchID finger print scanner on the front-bottom bezel… It would be an easy transition phone for anyone wanting to make the jump from an iPhone 5 to the wonderful world of Android…

Does look like a very inviting phone but that battery size is a concern. Lack of finger print scan doesn’t help either.

Phone looks nice, but battery could be a problem. Wonder how I would get my hands on a real version and not a clone of this in Shenzhen. I’m not that trusting of taobao or Huaqiangbei.

Even with the iOcean X9 not off the ranks yet; iOcean are already touting their “newer” Z1 over at Geekbuying. Seems to be a MTK6795 with a 2560×1440 2K pixel screen and an alleged 4000mAh battery. What to buy?

It’s pretty clear that mobile phone manufacturers have figured out that screen:body ratio matters a LOT to the average consumer. Otherwise, we wouldn’t see phone after phone after phone getting “pre-released” with doctored screenshots, false renders, or beauty shots with the phone’s screen always at an angle in relation to the camera; all to make the phone appear to have a better screen:body ratio.
So if manufacturers know this, why on earth aren’t we seeing more phones manufactured like the LG G2/G3/G4? Is it that cost prohibitive? For example, the Ecoo Aurora, recently reviewed here on Gizchina, has the most poorly implemented screen I’ve ever seen. Not only does it have a large frame around the screen, but also large black bezels on each side that aren’t even the same width! Given the choice between that 1080p display and a 720p display without the bezels, I wouldn’t have to think twice; I’d take the 720p display. The phone would be more compact, more visually attractive, and would naturally perform better with the lower res display.
I’m leaving phones like the recently “released” ZTE Nubia Z9 out of the equation because I don’t think totally frame-less/bezel-less phones are practical or even particularly attractive. That being said, if companies are going to play the spec-wars game, I’d rather they play it with screen:body ratio and not screen resolution. 2K/+ displays, in my opinion, are the most pointless feature on mobile phones today. They’re horrible for battery life, performance, and your eyes (higher screen resolutions make for smaller pixels, which in turn make for smaller text/icons/pictures/etc).
I own the LG G3 today because of it’s screen:body ratio, but I much preferred the display and performance of my last phone, the OnePlus One. An LG G3 with a 1080p display would have been my perfect phone.

  Manufacturers know that the market is so incredibly varied there is no “one right answer”. For instance you say given the choice you would take a 720p display (I would too) but on here we are in the minority for that answer. Personally I love the LG G series performance but think they are some of the ugliest phones ever made. I would own one if they weren’t so hideous looking.

Low battery capacity and no touch home buttons. Im saying no. Camera is nice tho. Glass on rear is dumb thing to have on phones. More things that can break.

It’s a shame about that battery because this is a fantastic looking phone. Iocean loves to offer good looking phones with incredibly small batteries. I use the X8 for work and I am lucky to get 6-7 hours with normal usage (taking pics, browsing the internet, using a notepad).
