Rumour: Xiaomi doing a Samsung, building 2 versions of the Xiaomi Mi5

Almost a year ago Samsung announced two versions of the S6, and now rumours say Xiaomi could be going down a similar route with the Xiaomi Mi5.

If reports are to be believed then the Xiaomi Mi5 will launch on February 22nd , but there won’t simply be one Xiaomi Mi5 with different specifications but two entirely different models to cater for various tastes.

Apparently Xiaomi are working with both Foxconn and Inventec to ensure that enough Xiaomi Mi5 are produced in time for the launch and Foxconn are even putting in extra hours to fill orders of the new Mi Flagship.

What’s really interesting is that both factories might be working on separate versions of the Mi5 with slightly different hardware but completely different physical bodies.

The Xiaomi Mi5 with 3GB RAM and 32GB memory is apparently going to get a curved glass display (similar to the Samsung Galaxy S6) while the flagship 4G RAM 64GB memory version will have an all metal design.

Both versions of the Mi5 will use the same Samsung manufactured Snapdragon 820 with new 14nm technology, and 5.2-inch display, more Xiaomi Mi5 specs below:

5.2-inch display with either FHD or 2K resolution
Snapdragon 820 chipset running at 2.2Ghz
Adreno 530 GPU
4-3GB RAM
32-64GB internal memory

20 mega-pixel rear camera with dual LED flash
8 mega-pixel front camera
Fingerprint scanner with Qualcomm Sense ID
3600mAh battery with Qualcomm quick charge
Android 6.0 with MIUI 7 UI

So those are the latest Xiaomi Mi5 rumours, and with just under a month to go before the launch expect more far fetched ideas to emerge. However if these details are true which would you opt for, less memory but a more stylish curved display, or more memory and all alloy design?

  Source only mentions a curved display, could be like the Mi4 with metal chassis and plastic rear. Could be just a rumour

    Have you tried to confirm with them if the Note 3 Pro has microSD?
    Their site still mentions it but haven’t yet seem them say elsewhere or some other solid confirmation.

They are a lot more likely to copy Apple and do 2 different sizes. Ofc if that’s the design, it’s just tragic.

  Would they be copying Apple or ZTE? ZTE was doing multiple Nubia sizes before Apple was ;).
  As for the design if that is it, it is very boring and generic looking.

  14nm FinFET – at an abstract level – they sammy, apple, qualcomm et al are dependent on each other. foxconn made iphones and now it also makes Mi5. 😀

  Samsung is manufacturing the SD820 for Qualcomm. Qualcomm switched from TSMC due to Samsung using 14nm.

This makes sense it allows them to still offer a base model Mi5 for 1999 yuan (like I have been saying all along they would) with FHD display. And have a “pro” model with a 2k display. I would prefer an Alloy fan with more memory.

    At this times I’m all for software optimization as my X10 device is running a 23.7mpx camera with no hiccups and won’t lose configurations or noting no bug or anything except for the firts week when it was constantly AND SILENTLY updating a bunch of stuff.
    I sincerely hope if there’s anything similar to this from Gionee, that BLU will be able to pull off the same trick they did with the Elife E8 I’m really impressed and all the ones that see the phone and grab it and mess with it and try the pictures they all love it and compare picture quality with the 2 top dogs iP6s and sGalx6s

Banking it all on the SD820, that chip must really be good, if they are all gunning for it.
It`s a shame that any phone with it will cost above 350$, at least this year.

The only phone everyone has seen so far is the supposed glass back and front one which is more Samsung than Apple. Nobody knows what the metal one looks like but already people are moaning is it because Android user have so much choice that’s all they do. We don’t know the price we are not 100% sure what it will look like and already people are talking bench marks which mean nothing in real world day to day use as there is nothing that is going to tax the SD20 when it comes out. There is not many games that an average phone can’t handle and yes every year we are promised that battery performance will be amazing and multi tasking will be out this world. So can’t we just wait and see
