TrendForce’s latest market performance report shows that the total global production of smartphones in the third quarter is about 325 million units. However, the growth rate and overall performance are not as good as the same period last year. In fact, the performance this year is worse than 2019 before the pandemic. To this end, TrendForce has lowered its annual production forecast for 2021 to 1.335 billion units, an annual increase of 6.5%. Relative to its previous estimates of an annual increase of 7.3% to 1.345 billion units, the main reason is that the output of the supply chain is affected by chip shortages. However, Samsung remains the top smartphone manufacturer globally.
According to the report, Samsung’s production volume in the third quarter was 69 million units, an increase of 17.9% quarter-on-quarter. This is mainly due to the stabilization of the performance of the brand’s Vietnamese factories. Apple released four new models in the iPhone 13 series in the third quarter. However, their good performance will not count much for the third quarter. Thus, Apple has to settle for second place, behind Samsung. Apple’s production volume in the quarter was 51.5 million units, an increase of 22.6%. In the third, fourth, and fifth positions are Oppo, Xiaomi, and Vivo respectively.

A recent report from Counterpoint Research reveals that for the first time in six years, Apple is the number one brand in China. Apple surpassed Vivo in October 2021 to become the largest smartphone manufacturer in the Chinese market. In terms of product planning, in addition to maintaining the release of four new phones in the second half of the year, Apple will launch the third-generation iPhone SE at the end of the first quarter. This device is probably a good weapon for Apple in the mid-range 5G market.
