Huawei applies for Harmony Galaxy and HarmonyOS NEXT trademarks

Huawei has recently applied for two new trademarks, “Hongmeng Galaxy” and “HarmonyOS NEXT,” indicating the company’s ongoing development and expansion of its HarmonyOS ecosystem. These trademarks are part of Huawei’s broader strategy to strengthen its smartphone business and provide a unified software experience across multiple consumer electronics. The HarmonyOS, initially launched in 2019, is designed to be an alternative to Android and to offer a seamless and interconnected user experience across various devices. Internationally, these trademarks are classified as scientific instruments. Huawei just applied for the trademark and the status at the moment is “awaiting substantive review.”

At the Harmony Ecosystem Qiansai Sailing Ceremony held on January 18, Huawei announced the HarmonyOS NEXT and Harmony Galaxy system developer preview version. The company said at the event that they are now open for apps. It also promised to launch the developer Beta program in Q2 this year and release the commercial version in Q4 this year.Ā

According to Huawei, the HarmonyOS NEXT developer preview version will no longer be compatible with Android open-source apps. It will only support Harmony kernel and system apps,Ā so it is called “pure-blooded Harmony”. Harmony Galaxy Edition will achieve six ultimate native experiences. These features are native refinement, apps, smoothness, security, intelligence, and interconnection.

According to previous warm-up videos, the Harmony Galaxy Edition focuses on concepts such as “Spatial”, “Vivid Color” and “Immersive” (spatial, colourful, immersive) in design. It partially applies a UI layout, a new style control centre and different systems. It also uses a variety of colours used in the app.

Harmony Galaxy

Harmony Galaxy is a well-developed system that is independent of the Linux kernel. According to Huawei, the Harmony Galaxy will be more efficient and fluent than the HarmonyOS 4. Huawei is not keeping this system secret as it has released the official promotional video for the system. We now have a sneak peek into the UI design interface of this system. From the video, we can see that the company did not make many changes to the main interface. It looks pretty much the same as the HarmonyOS 4. However, it made some tweaks in the font andĀ presentation method. For example, in addition to time and weather, the folding screen also has an additional calendar display.

The modifications to the drop-down notification bar are pretty significant. Each function button is now largerĀ in size and density, allowing the Hyper Terminal to remain in its original place while moving it up. However, placing function buttons in this manner necessitates greater accuracy in the system’s overall management; otherwise, unintentional touches are common.

The interfaces of other system APPs, such as Time, Calendar, Memo, and so on, are similar to HarmonyOS 4. However, each programme has its system colour, and the weather has more animation effects and information presentation.

In addition to the system’s pre-installed apps, anĀ initial group of over 300 partners is driving the development of Harmony’s native apps. Those with quicker development progress have already released dedicated official or beta versions. More than 60 game partners have now joined the Harmony Ecological Alliance. There are alsoĀ over 70 games thatĀ have beenĀ completed

HarmonyOS NEXT

HarmonyOS NEXT is a pure HarmonyOS without Android apps, designed to be a playfield for developers to build and test native mobile apps for a solid app ecosystem. It is part of the HarmonyOS ecosystem, which is a universal single IoT platform that allows developers to write apps once and run them across various devices such as phones, tablets, personal computers, TVs, cars, smartwatches, and more. According to Huawei, the kernel of HarmonyOS NEXT is claimed to be three times more efficient than Linux. As of August 2023, there were reportedly over 2.2 million developers participating in developing HarmonyOS apps. This indicates a significant focus on building a robust app ecosystem for HarmonyOS.
